An international women’s rugby star has made an online plea for a boot sponsor on social media – and her Saracens Women club teammate admitted she was also on the hunt for help funding kit for the season ahead.
Grace Moore, 27, who born in the UK but plays for the Irish women’s national rugby team, asked her followers on X to help fund two pairs of boots for the season, at a cost of £400.
Her post has since been viewed nearly 800,000 times and the Saracens player has since updated that she’s found a sponsor – but her club mate Sydney Gregson followed up saying she was also struggling to afford boots.
Moore wrote on Wednesday: ‘I’m desperately looking for a boot sponsor for this season! Ideally up to £400 (to cover the cost of two pairs of boots for this season)
‘Please get it touch if this is something you might be able to assist with (even if it’s one pair for this season) Thank you.’
Later, Gregson offered a similar appeal, writing: ‘I am also looking for a boot sponsor! Any support would be amazing.’
Many were shocked that the athletes should struggle to pay for kit when playing at the highest level.
One wrote: ‘How can an Irish international not get boots by the huge money from @IrishRugby?’
Moore is a back-rower playing for Saracens Women, which competes in the Premiership Women’s Rugby league, the UK’s top tier.
Another wrote: ‘I’m happy to see you have been sponsored, but it should never have come to this.’
One person penned: ‘I can’t believe a person with your skills and experience, needs to ask for help , shame on the game.’
After her post proved successful – and even triggered a TikTok campaign, the player offered thanks to those who’d shared and responded, saying: ‘Taken back by all of the support, reshares and messages have received!
‘Thank you all so much! I have found a sponsor. Thank you Twitter community.’
