J.J. Watt blasts Texans’ effort: ‘This is a privilege’ – The Athletic

Was this surprising from Watt?

Aaron Reiss, Texans beat writer: Watt has had many frustrating news conferences during this season, but this is the most clearly fed up he’s been. That’s probably because the Bengals are the worst team Houston has lost to this season, and unlike when the Texans surrendered 36 points to the Bears, the offense did its part on Sunday. Running back David Johnson had a rare good game, and for the sixth time this season, Deshaun Watson averaged over 9 yards per attempt, threw at least two touchdowns and didn’t record an interception. But Houston has gone just 2-4 in those games.

Are the Texans a good football team playing poorly or is this closer to their true talent level?

Reiss: This team is just bad, especially on defense. Over the past couple of years, the Texans have lost playmakers on defense and failed to replace them. Cornerback was the team’s weakest position heading into the season, and its only gotten thinner as the season has progressed. Outside of Watt, no pass rusher consistently strikes fear in opposing offenses. And even Watt, 31, is on the decline.
