‘I felt like a prat!’ James Blunt reveals he ended up ‘looking like a waiter’ at one of Elton’s John’s white tie parties after hiring a cheap suit for the occasion

James Blunt has revealed that he ended up ‘looking like a waiter’ at one of Elton’s John’s white tie parties after hiring a cheap suit for the occasion.

The singer, 48, made the candid admission on Amanda Wakeley’s Style DNA podcast this week as he discussed his past fashion disasters.

The former British Army officer told how he arrived ‘looking ridiculous’ and ‘felt like a prat’ while all the other celebrities ‘just turned up as pop stars’.

He said: ‘Sometimes if I’m given the instruction then I’ll turn up as instructed! So I did turn up to Elton John and David Furnish’s white tie and tiara party, I’d just left the army and become a pop star.

‘So I’d just gone out and hired a white tie and tiara. And turned up looking ridiculous. And everyone else was pop stars and they just turned up as pop stars!

‘So I was the only one, looking like a waiter and looking like a pratt. And so I learned the hard way, I won’t be doing that again.’

Continuing to chat about fashion James also chatted about his worst ever fashion moment, saying he once ended up in a less than ideal situation after a night of partying while on a skiing holiday.

He said: ‘In terms of dressing up… I remember walking back home from a party at something like six in the morning. It’s not the walk of shame, it was a long party.

‘It was through Verbier. And I was dressed up as a woman in high heels, and there was a guy in a Porsche stuck in a snowdrift.

‘I offered to help him push his Porsche out of the snow drift, fully dressed as a woman but fairly obviously not a woman, he begged me not to help!’

It comes after late last year BBC Breakfast viewers were left in shock as they dubbed an interview with James ‘unprofessional’ and ‘bizarre’.

The Goodbye My Lover singer appeared in the studio to discuss his tour, but was subjected to questioning about plastic surgery and his opinion on Uber.

During the chat with Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty there were several awkward silences and jokes from the presenters that didn’t land, which didn’t go unnoticed by viewers.

Viewers were left perplexed by the random nature of the chat, taking to Twitter to pen: ‘Stupid irrelevant questions. What were you thinking?’; ‘What a dreadful interview by Charlie and Naga, we had to turn it off as it was so appalling, even James Blunt thought so.’

‘Personally I think JB is great and very funny on Twitter but @BBCBreakfast team completely ruined what could have been a fun interview. Instead it was awkward and very unfunny. Just let the guest flow. Charlie and Naga are clumsy at best’;

‘Breakfast television on BBC should either get moved to CBBies or axed. I have never seen anything more unprofessional as the Mr Blunt interview. Naga and Charlie pathetic. It was on par with Dan Walkers out of depth questioning.’

James kicked off a nine date UK arena tour earlier in 2022 which saw him celebrate songs spanning a 17-year career that has sold over 23 million album as well as five Grammy Award nominations.
