Jeff Bridges says he’s feeling much better after battling cancer and contracting COVID-19: ‘It wiped me out’

Jeff Brides has been through a lot health-wise over the last couple years, but he’s doing much better now.

The 72-year-old actor opened up about his health struggles in an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his series The Old Man.

When asked how he’s doing after his diagnosis with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2020, The Big Lebowski star said he’s ‘feeling good.’

‘Cancer-wise, yeah remission, and COVID, you know, that made my cancer look like nothing, that COVID,’ he revealed. ‘I did my chemo for the cancer and that stripped me of all my immune system, so then I got COVID on top of that, and it wiped me out.’

Bridges discussed his struggles in more detail during an interview with People at the end of May.

‘I was pretty close to dying. The doctors kept telling me, “Jeff, you’ve got to fight. You’re not fighting.” I was in surrender mode. I was ready to go. I was dancing with my mortality,’ said the father of three who has been married to wife Susan Geston since 1977.

He was weak from battling cancer – which he revealed in early 2020 he had – and he was not vaccinated as there was no vaccine yet.

‘I had no defense. That’s what chemo does — it strips you of all your immune system. I had nothing to fight it,’ Bridges told the site.

With Entertainment Tonight, he talked about the huge break the team took while trying to make The Old Man. The show was pushed off because of Bridges’ chemotherapy and the pandemic.

‘Oh man, that all seems like a bizarre dream, you know,’ he said. ‘We started The Old Man three years ago.’

‘Had two years off, and then come back into it, and and it’s like we had a long weekend and I, you know, had this bizarre dream,’ he said during the interview.

The show was supposed to premiere on FX last year before the challenges forced filming back. Bridges serves as an executive producer on the show as well.

He also complimented his collaborators, saying, ‘What a great group of, you know, not only the cast but just right, starting with John Steinberg, the writer, and Lauren Littlefield. The whole team.’

The Old Man follows former CIA agent Dan Chase who left the agency and lives off the grid. When an assassin comes for him, he must fight his way through a litany of enemies.

Bridges stars as Chase alongside Shrek actor John Lithgow, Iron Man actor Faran Tahir and Continuance star Noor Razooky.

The True Grit star had particular praise for Bill Heck who plays a younger version of Chase saying he did ‘such a great job.’

The show is based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 novel of the same name and will premiere on FX on June 16.
