John tweeted: ‘We think we have witnessed a terrorist attack here in Berlin we’re not sure there’s a lot of people dead bodies all over the place we’ve seen a car that came down the road and ended up in a storefront covering three city blocks it’s pretty horrific #berlin (sic)’.

He later posted a video where he shakily recounted the incident, saying: ‘So my friend Mikey K told us to sit by a tree just in case anything else happens because it’s something that’s between us and any other vehicles that might come.

‘It’s really pretty bad guys, there’s … over where we are here there’s a lot of police, there’s a dead body in the middle of the road, then over here there is all the emergency services that are trying to help victims and people.

‘There’s a lot of people walking with limps and injuries. If I’m pointing to you from the road, up there the car came down onto the pavement … we had dinner in that restaurant last night.’

Describing what he saw, he said: “The car came down onto the pavement, then it’s come down onto the road over there, has hit somebody, then has gone down the road and come back onto the pavement down that way.

‘It came back onto the pavement and [went] through a bunch of people, gone through… the photograph I posted of a café, and right into a storefront window.

‘The police presence is unbelievable, they are clearing out the area, it was cordoned off. I heard the bang and the crash when we were in a store, and we just came out and saw the carnage.

‘There’s helicopters coming in now to airlift people, so I’m going to let you see this then I’ll get back to you.

‘We have been moved all the way down away from the incident, you can see up there the police behind us and there’s other police cars coming.’

The Torchwood actor, who is with his husband Scott Gill in Berlin, admitted he was ‘OK’ and the couple were heading back to their hotel.

John added: ‘This is bad, this is serious. I mean, really bad. There’s multiple fatalities, there is hundreds of emergency services that are in the area, they’re blocking off city block after city block, and the cordon keeps expanding and we’re being pushed back and out.

‘We are making our way back to the hotel, we’ve both spoken to our parents to let them know we’re OK, but we’re going back to the hotel as we kind of don’t want to be on the street.’

Dozens of people were hurt in the crash, some of them seriously, as local media said the car repeatedly mounted the pavement and hit people before the driver tried to flee

Police say a 29-year-old German-Armenian man with joint citizenship who had been living in Berlin drove a silver Renault Clio into people on Tauentzienstrausse, a street packed with shops and cafes that is overlooked by Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, around 10.30am local time Wednesday.

Witnesses said the car drove ‘very fast’ towards the pavement before mounting it and hitting pedestrians, then rejoined the road and drove about 600ft further down the street.

The car then mounted the pavement again, hit more shoppers, and crashed through the front window of a Douglas perfume shop.

The driver tried to flee the scene but was held by two passersby until police arrived.

The man has been arrested, but police have refused to say whether they believe the crash was deliberate or an accident.

The crash happened just yards from where an Islamist extremist killed 12 people at a Christmas market in 2016 by ramming them with a stolen van.

The dead person is a teacher, Die Welt reported, with students said to be among the injured. Five of the injured are in critical condition, with another three seriously hurt, the fire department said.

Speaking to Sky News, John added: ‘How horrible that this morning these people got up to just go through a regular day, they were going through their daily business. I mean we were shopping, but if you think if we’d have come out of that store one minute earlier…

‘We are no experts but this looks intentional,’ he added.

Police said: ‘A man is believed to have driven into a group of people. It is not yet known whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.’
