So many things go into being a member of one of the most famous families in the world. Royals such as Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle each have a huge fan base, but there are also safety issues to worry about. Sadly, there is always a small chance of something horrible happening, which is something that the royals always must be prepared for.

While it’s known that Meghan and Kate both went through “duchess training” in order to learn things such as how to greet the queen, and how to properly exit a car when making appearances, there is more they learned that no one really talks about. Let’s discuss how Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s royal training included staged kidnappings and fake guns.

A little about Kate and Meghan

Meghan and Kate both have extraordinary lives. Neither of them was born into royalty, and they both ended up marrying handsome princes. Kate, as we know, was a commoner who had no ties to the royal family. She grew up in Bucklebury, England, in a typical family of five, and it wasn’t until she went off to college at the University of Saint Andrews that she caught the eye of Britain’s future king.

Kate and William embarked on a years-long relationship before getting married, officially making Kate the Duchess of Cambridge. Meghan’s story, on the other hand, is a little different. She was a successful actress, having gotten her big break on the legal drama Suits, before meeting Prince Harry on a blind date. They hit it off from the start, and after a whirlwind romance, became husband and wife in 2018.

The in-depth training to become a royal

Marrying into the royal family is pretty different from marrying into any other. There is a long list of royal rules and protocols that must be followed and given that the royals are constantly watched and photographed, there is little, if any, room for error. Before joining the family, both duchesses had to undergo extensive training, and it is not necessarily what fans would have expected.

According to Town & Country, both Meghan and Kate had to take the time to learn things such as how to act in certain situations, and how to handle the massive amounts of media attention they now receive. It really is true when they say royal life isn’t easy, and the training more than proves that.

Many people might envision the royal sisters-in-law having gone through their royal training practicing how to curtsy, and fine-tuning their public speaking skills, but there was a side of it that was much more safety-oriented. According to the new biography, Finding Freedom, both duchesses’ training included staged kidnappings and fake guns. Meghan and Kate needed to be prepared, and the royal family made sure they knew exactly what to do if their safety was ever compromised.

According to Travel & Leisure, there was a two-day course that taught how to handle potential kidnappings. The authors of the biography, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand say “Meghan took part in a staged kidnapping, where she was bundled up in a car by a ‘terrorist,’ taken to a different location, and then ‘saved’ by officers firing fake guns”. The book goes on to say that “Meghan was taught to develop a relationship with the enemy. She was also instructed on how to drive a car while in pursuit.”

While we hope these are skills that Meghan and Kate will never have to use, we are glad their safety is taken so seriously.
