The heir to grade II listed Knebworth House in Stevenage told the magazine exactly how the proposal unfolded and how he told Helena’s parents about his romantic plan.

He said: ‘I got down on one knee at the lake just across from their house. She thought I was being particularly British wanting to go for a walk in the cold and the rain but I nervously had “the chat” with her parents the night before and thankfully they were thrilled.’

Edward’s wife-to-be Helena, from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, comes from a family of doctors.

Posing with Edward in an Instagram photo shared on his profile, she proudly held up her engagement ring, which is a family heirloom once belonging to Edwards great-grandmother Lady Hermione Bulwer-Lytton, who was married to the First Baron Cobbold.

Edward posted the snap on Instagram with the caption: ‘Sie Sagte ja!’ which translates from German as: ‘She said yes!’

Instrumentalist Edward explained how their relationship grew during the first Covid lockdown while Helena, who was studying medicine at the time, was visiting Knebworth House and ended up stuck in the country.

‘This is when the relationship really grew,’ Edward recalled, adding Helena is now a qualified NHS doctor.

He also revealed the pair will be tying the knot at Knebworth next year and they are already making arrangements.

To ensure they split their time between his home and the bride’s home, they will hosy an engagement party at one of Helena’s family estates in Germany.

Edward’s nuptials will follow the 2022 wedding of the year when his sister Morwenna, a former model, wed her beau Philip Bush in a lavish ceremony for which she wore a vintage Vivienne Westwood gown and dazzled in the family tiara.

For now the couple, who currently live on the Knebworth Estate, are enjoying each other’s company while out and about – and Edward revealed the pair are particularly keen on seeing live music.

He revealed: ‘We go to gigs together a lot,’ adding the pair had attended Liam Gallagher’s iconic return to Knebworth last summer.
