‘I wanted to be me, not just his daughter’: Lily Collins denies getting a ‘free pass’ in the industry thanks to her famous father Phil and says she’s afraid to sing for fear of comparisons

Lily Collins has refuted any insinuation that she got a leg up in the industry thanks to her famous father.

The actress, 33, is the daughter of English musician and lead singer of Genesis, Phil Collins.

However, she denied relying on her name, as she said she wanted to be her own person, rather than just her dad’s daughter.

Speaking to Vogue France, Lily said: ‘It was out of the question that people would think that I use a free pass thanks to my name.

‘I’m proud of my dad, but I wanted to be me, not just his daughter. For that, I was ready to wait to break through.

She explained: ‘By dint of failed castings, I learned to focus more on my work, and I managed to make acting my job.

‘But I’m not resting on my laurels: this environment is very competitive and places are expensive!’

Lily also added that she had chosen to act over music, as she feared being compared to her ‘paternal genius’ dad.

She said: ‘I love to sing. But as I wanted to make my own way, far from the paternal genius, I preferred to be an actress.

‘I played in a few musicals because it’s the only setting in which I allow myself to sing. Frankly, I would be too afraid of comparisons!’

Discussing her desire to become an actress, Lily explained that it was a dream since childhood.

She said: ‘As a child, my parents told me stories at bedtime and I had only one desire: to make the magic last.

‘Very quickly, I had the desire to embark people with me on this adventure that is performance.

‘Because I have always felt crossed by what constitutes the world, I have always been attracted by psychology and sociology.

‘As an actor, you study other human beings, you create a character, you build it. It’s exciting.’

Elsewhere in the chat, Lily spoke about her popular Netflix show, Emily in Paris, which has landed her a Golden Globe nomination for the titular role of Emily.

Talking about the success of the series, she said she had not expected it would become such a huge hit.

She said: ‘Even if while reading the script, I felt that something could happen… Moreover, we were several young women hoping to get this role. I’m incredibly lucky…

‘After a few months, the forced lockdown following the Covid pandemic confirmed the therapeutic aspect of the series.

‘Being confined to your home, but seeing the scenery, laughing, crying a little: this is what Emily in Paris has allowed, arriving at a time when the public, but also us, the teams, needed it the most.

Lily also said that the show highlights female empowerment, saying: ‘The series features women from different generations who, if they seem poles apart, have a lot in common.

‘In the second season, Sylvie starts a new professional adventure, Camille also experiences big changes… All the women of Emily in Paris have their say.

‘From the first episode, I liked Emily’s attitude, how she dedicates herself to her job, without apologizing for anything.

In interview, I was asked several times if Emily was more romantic or more workaholic… It’s strange: why should she choose?

‘Why are we labeled workaholics when we love our job and why are we supposed to be disconnected from reality when we are romantic? We can be everything at the same time!’

As Emily has grown more accustomed to her life in Paris, so too has Lily she explained.

She said: ‘Today, Paris seems smaller to me because I understand it better: with my husband (screenwriter and producer Charlie McDowell, editor’s note), we found our marks, we no longer look at Google Maps to find out where the we go, we cross the city on a scooter or on a bicycle. I almost feel like I’m at home…

‘As a child, I lived in the United States with my mother, but I learned French at school, and I often went to see my father who lived in Switzerland. My closeness to French-speaking culture therefore goes back a long way.

‘In the new season, I am delighted to hear Philippine, Camille, Lucas or Samuel play in their mother tongue, and to seeing that Emily is progressing – it allows me to practice again!’

One of the biggest aspects of Emily In Paris that has caught fan’s attention is the fashion forward outfits.

Lily explained: ‘Certainly, we had this desire to work with emerging designers – even if they weren’t yet in Vogue!

‘This summer, I met a lot of young people who explained to me that they thought of Emily’s dressing room when they were packing…

‘It’s very interesting that the series has become a platform for new talents – and not only for young actors but also cafes, restaurants, bakeries… When I think that there is an “Emily in Paris tour” offered to tourists, I pinch myself to believe it!’

On her own love of fashion, Lily said: ‘Back when vintage wasn’t considered cool, my mom dressed in thrift stores. Me, I was in my stroller while she haggled!

‘She has always encouraged me to express myself through my clothes, which can replace words. One day I’m a fairy tale princess, the next a rock’n’roll girl.

‘A bright color, a belt… anything can change a personality, a statement, an attitude. With the Emily in Paris costume designers, we’re having a blast!’

The show has been compared favourably to Sex In The City, which was also made by Emily In Paris creator Darren Star.

Lily said she was a fan of the New York series, gushing: ‘Sex and the City deploys one of Darren’s gifts: to recreate the magic of a city, to make it a character in its own right.

‘In Emily in Paris, he achieves this mixture of romance, tragicomic and dreamlike, even if our feet are anchored on the ground.

‘Darren also has an incredible sense of casting, bringing together people who get along and therefore work well together.

‘He is very present: moreover, he came to the set today, in Chinon… Darren is interested in everyone and everything, even dresses!

‘He let me evolve in my character, which gave me a lot of freedom, while advising me when needed.’

Comparing herself to her character, she added: ‘We both love fashion, travel… and our respective jobs! We are not afraid to confide in our loved ones, to ask for help.

‘Like Emily, I like to see the best in people. Think positively, find solutions. Without depriving himself of complaining, of course!

‘On the other hand, I don’t always agree with her sentimental choices… Emily is very close to me, so close that my approach and my look have changed.

‘She’s a character from whom I learned a lot, whom I love enormously, so much so that I have to watch over the place that Emily takes in my life. Knowing when she’s leaving, and when she can come back to me, Lily.’

Lily put on a leggy display in a white miniskirt as she posed on the front of the fashion magazine.

She layered a brown leather jacket over the top and her tresses were left down to tumble over her shoulders.

She then got her legs out again as she slipped into a bright pink plaid miniskirt and black and white patterned jacket.

The star sported a light palette of makeup to enhance her naturally beautiful features.

The December/January 2022/2023 issue of Vogue France is available on the digital kiosk.
