In an exclusive interview with MailOnline that was published on Monday, JJ claimed that the ex-couple were not intimate because he was fearful of disclosing the private information without Ella’s consent.
But after speaking with his former partner, JJ wants to set the record straight, explaining that he and Ella did take their relationship to the next level.
The clothing brand owner says it felt ‘natural’ to explore his feelings for Ella ‘when the pressure was off’ as they visited his home in Essex during filming of the E4 show.
And JJ, who has spoken about the impact Ella has made on his life, adds that his ex ‘shares the same genitalia as any other woman I have been with’ after she was open about her transition from the beginning of their romance.
He said: ‘Yesterday when I was asked this question, I hadn’t spoken to Ella… a lot of girls wouldn’t want this to be public and again for me I’m quite private, so I didn’t want to speak about it.
‘But at the same time, we don’t want anything that’s not true to be out there so now I feel the need to put the record straight.
‘Where we hadn’t had the conversation, I didn’t think it was right to speak about it until I had spoken to Ella, and I have now and she’s comfortable with it being public.
‘We did take our relationship to the next level. It was during my homestay… the pressure was off a little bit because we were outside of the bubble and there wasn’t anyone else around us with their opinions.
‘We had a bit of time away and it was a reassuring time in our relationship. It felt natural and right to explore the next stage. It’s not something that we rushed into.’
On Monday, JJ spoke about the vile homophobic abuse he suffered from online trolls who called him ‘gay’ because of his relationship with Ella.
He said the ‘unkind’ remarks about his sexuality were hard to deal with but his close friendship with Ella made the backlash he experienced worthwhile.
JJ explained that it was Ella’s ability to openly discuss her transition and his acceptance of her past that brought them closer together, insisting once again that he sees her as the woman she is today.
He said: ‘I don’t see it as a big thing, Ella is like any other woman I have ever been with, and I see Ella as a woman.
‘Ella has been very open with her transition and shares the same genitalia as any other woman I have been with. Our relationship was important to both of us, and we are still really good friends.’
JJ and Ella decided not to reveal that they had spent the night together to the show’s relationship experts and their intimacy wasn’t spoken about on the series.
The couple rejoined the experiment after they developed feelings for each other following the breakdown of their respective marriages to Nathanial Valentino and Bianca .
And JJ says having sex with Ella meant more to him than just the physical, after he spoke on the show about wanting to take his time before bedding someone in the process.
He said: ‘We decided that neither of us felt the need to talk about it on the show, we spoke about it between us and people didn’t ask so it was normal what happened, we are both adults, and we weren’t going to shout it from the top of our lungs. It’s how it would be in any other relationship.
‘At that point it was natural and, in any relationship that I have ever been in, when you feel comfortable with someone that’s what happens.’
Ella became the first transgender contestant to star on the UK series of Married At First Sight after undergoing gender reassignment surgery when she was 21.
She credits JJ for helping to build her confidence after saying that she had been rejected by straight men in the past and kept as a ‘dirty secret.’
Ella said: ‘Guys do not accept me, and I don’t want to be someone’s fetish. I’ve had a lot of guys interested but as soon as they find out about me or as soon as it gets to a serious stage, they cut it off because they’re embarrassed by me, and they don’t want to tell their family and friends.
‘I don’t want to be someone’s dirty secret, but I feel like people aren’t educated these days.’
JJ says that Ella’s participation on the reality show has helped to educate viewers that still have narrow minded viewers towards the trans community.
He added: ‘A lot of people are uneducated, and Ella has helped to educate so many people, me included, Ella is the first trans person that I’ve ever met… the whole time I was just trying to follow my heart and be kind along the way.’
The couple went their separate ways during the show’s final vow renewals, but JJ and Ella have remained good friends and still find the time to speak every day.
He said: ‘In the end, we ended up arguing too much and the pressure ruined what we had.
‘As soon as we took a step back and agreed to be friends, we still speak every day on the phone now, we’re close friends. We work a lot better as friends.’
