Horror as man ‘pours petrol’ over one-year-old girl and allegedly smashes a glass over her mum’s head as she desperately tried to wash away the toxic substance

A man will face court today after he allegedly doused a one-year-old girl in petrol before hitting her mother over the head with a glass as she desperately tried to wash the toxic substance off the child’s face.

Police were called to a home in Mount Saint Thomas, a suburb of Wollongong, south of Sydney, just after 8pm on Tuesday over reports of a domestic assault.

The man, aged 41, is accused of verbally abusing the 48-year-old woman at the home, before the mother and daughter fled into another room.

The mother tried to use a pram to barricade the door but the man allegedly forced his way in and poured petrol over the child. 

As the mum tried to wash the toxic substance off her daughter’s face, police allege the man then smashed a glass over her head.

The mother and daughter were able to flee the home and call police.

The one-year-old was treated by paramedics and did not need to go to hospital. 

The man was charged with three counts of assault, destroy or damage property and stalk or intimidate with the intention to cause fear and physical harm.

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.
