Man turns sleep-talking girlfriend’s unconscious ramblings into artistic Rupi Kaur-style poems

A Scottish man has invented a new kind of bedtime story after turning his sleep-talking girlfriend’s unconscious ramblings into Rupi Kaur-style poems.

Writer and video producer Harry Mitchell explained on Twitter last weekend that his girlfriend, Blair McPake, talks in her sleep — and he finds her middle-of-the-night utterances so interesting that he began jotting them down.

After several weeks of gathering material, Harry has now turned her sleep-talking into poems in the style of 28-year-old Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, with free verse lines and corresponding illustrations.

‘My girlfriend talks in her sleep. I’ve noted them down for weeks, and turned her dreams into Rupi Kaur poems,’ Harry wrote.

Rupi Kaur is a popular writer whose ‘Instapoetry’ is recognizable by its short, free verse style, and basic black-and-white illustrations.

Harry’s poems have the same look and format, but use Blair’s bizarre sleep-talking statements.

‘The ship is breaking,’ reads one, typed out next to an old-fashioned pirate ship. ‘It’s filling with water / I scoop.’

Another reads: ‘You have to cook – no. You have to cook the prawns. You cannot cook, you stupid cat.’

A third, typed next to an image of a crab, says: ‘I… am a grab. I go – side to side. Don’t go in the sea – snip snip.’

The poems are all written in lower case with random spacing and little punctuation.

Harry’s tweet quickly took off, earning over 886,000 likes so far. He followed up with a second set of poems, including one that goes: ‘I am sentient. I am… self-aware. I am Jesus.’

‘Go away mole man!’ reads another. ‘Big teeth, chomp chomp.’

To skeptics, Harry added: ‘Folks, i WISH i was making these up.’

‘I too wish he was making these up,’ added Blair.

‘This is the best thing I’ve ever seen,’ said another, while dozens replied with stories of their own sleep-talking partners.

Harry told fans of the tweet that he was inspired by a similar project tweeted by Reb Day of Hertfordshire, England, whose roommate made Rupi Kaur-style poems from ‘all the things I say to myself whilst playing GTA.’
