Changed your tune, Mitch? McConnell will host fundraisers for Herschel Walker and Blake Masters and now is ‘optimistic’ Republicans will take back the Senate – after criticizing ‘candidate quality’

  •  One month after decrying GOP ‘candidate quality,’ the Senate Republican leader will host a high-dollar fundraiser for Herschel Walker on Thursday
  • On Wednesday McConnell is planning to hold a fundraiser for Trump-backed Arizona candidate Blake Masters
  • The about-face comes after McConnell offered little enthusiasm about the GOP’s Senate prospects in comments he made last month
  • ‘I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate,’ McConnell said
  • ‘Senate races are just different, they’re statewide. Candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome’

Sen. Mitch McConnell has come around to the party’s Trumpiest newcomer candidates and this week will host a fundraiser in Washington, D.C. for Georgia Republican Herschel Walker.

One month after decrying GOP ‘candidate quality,’ the Senate Republican leader will host a high-dollar fundraiser for Herschel Walker on Thursday, DailyMail.com confirmed. The event will be held at Charlie Palmer Steak, a ritzy steakhouse just across from the Capitol, Punchbowl News reports.

On Wednesday McConnell is planning to hold a fundraiser for Trump-backed Arizona candidate Blake Masters.

The about-face comes after McConnell offered little enthusiasm about the GOP’s Senate prospects in comments he made last month.

‘I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate,’ McConnell said in Florence, Kentucky, at a Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Aug. 18.

‘Senate races are just different, they’re statewide. Candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.’

On Aug. 27, McConnell hosted and event in Louisville, Ky., to benefit Walker, Pennsylvania Republican candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz and Rep. Ted Budd, who is running for Senate in North Carolina.

An Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll found Walker and incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., locked in a dead heat two months ahead of midterm elections, with the Democrat leading over Walker 46-44 percent. But a Quinnipiac polll released last week found a wider difference – Warnock leading 52 to 46 percent. The two candidates will participate in a debate on Oct. 15.

Senate GOP leaders initially balked at Walker’s candidacy, worried about the past domestic abuse allegations he chalks up to his past struggles with mental health. But they became impressed by his fundraising abilities and McConnell endorsed the former NFL pro last year.

McConnell reportedly expressed ‘cautious optimism’ about his party’s Senate prospects at a closed-door Chamber of Commerce event this week.

McConnell told the group he wants to keep the election focused on inflation, the border and crime and claimed Democrats want to distract with other issues.

Meanwhile a McConnell-aligned super PAC and a PAC aligned with billionaire Peter Thiel have been engaged in a game of not-it in Arizona over who will foot the bill for last-minute ad buys for Masters.

The McConnell-aligned Senate Leadership Fund canceled a $9.6 million television ad buy Tuesday, hoping other outside conservative groups would foot the bill. Instead that money will be spent in Georgia, New Hampshire and Nevada.

A super PAC funded by Thiel is spending about $1.7 million on Masters, and combined with spending from other outside groups Masters will recover about $7.5 million of that ad spending. Thiel is also hosting a fundraiser for Masters at his Los Angeles home.
