McDonald’s launches McPlant burger in Australia: Where to buy vegan Maccas

McDonald’s quietly launches a brand new McPlant burger in Australia – but you’ll have to be quick

  • McDonald’s is launching their new McPlant burger in select Victorian stores
  • The McPlant burger will only be available until November 1 as part of the trial run
  • Beyond Meat co-developed the pea, rice, potato, and beetroot-based patty
  • Macca’s previously introduced McVeggie burgers in 2016 and 2019 to no avail

McDonald’s has announced the long-awaited arrival of the McPlant burger to select Australian restaurants in Victoria to assess customer reactions.

The burger is being released in 270 Macca’s eateries across Victoria from Wednesday 6 July until Tuesday 1 November for a trial run before the fast-food chain decides whether there is enough demand for it nationwide.

The McPlant, which was co-developed with Beyond Meat, is made with a juicy plant-based patty that contains peas, rice, potatoes, and beetroot.

The patty is served on a sesame seed bun with tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, mayonnaise-style sauce, ketchup, mustard and a slice of American cheese.

‘Our McPlant offers customers the same iconic Macca’s taste, in a delicious plant-based burger,’ said McDonald’s.

The vegan patty is part of a test McDonald’s is doing on new menu items and flavours as it appeals to a broader range of people.

However, the McPlant is not strictly a vegan burger despite its patty.

The burger contains non-vegan ingredients such as American cheese and mayonnaise, and will be cooked on the same grill as meat-based products and eggs.

While customers are still able to customise and request to remove the cheese, mayonnaise, or any other ingredients – there is still room for cross-contamination.

In addition, this is not the first time McDonald’s Australia has released a vegan or vegetarian-friendly option.

McDonald’s previously attempted to introduce the McVeggie burger in 2016 and in 2019 but both attempts failed due to lack of demand.

So if there isn’t enough traction around the McPlant – the long-awaited burger might not make it out of Victoria.
