Michael opened up about being cast in the role as Tony, and previously admitted he hadn’t watched his father’s show prior to the audition, although he had joined him on set when he was a child.

‘For me, the emotional part was watching the show for the first time and being so proud of my dad and so shocked at how good the show was,’ he stated, according to Interview Magazine

‘Even when I watch it now, it feels like spending time with my dad. It’s a gift that a lot of people don’t have with their lost loved ones,’ the actor movingly added.  At first, he had initially said ‘no’ to the audition.

‘It was really terrifying. I didn’t know anything about The Sopranos and was nervous about the nepotism thing,’ he explained, adding, ‘I auditioned three times, I think.’

Michael expressed that his mother, Marcy Wudarski, was very ‘supportive’ during the entire process. She had tied the knot with James in 1999, but the couple divorced later in 2002.
