A migrant mother in New York City committed suicide on Sunday in a facility sheltering some of the thousands of migrants that have been shipped to the city by other states, Mayor Eric Adams revealed.

Adams revealed the news in a statement, but did not disclose where the suicide took place or the identity of the mother.

‘The thousands of asylum seekers we have seen arrive in our city came to this country seeking a better life,’ the statement began.

‘Sadly, though, yesterday, an asylum seeker in one of our facilities took her own life,’ Adams continued.

The tragic news comes as Adams declared a ‘humanitarian crisis’ in his city after 2,500 migrants were bussed into the Big Apple and floods of people pour into Texas everyday.

‘Our hearts break for this young woman and any loved ones she may have, and we as a city mourn her,’ he said.

According to the Democrat Mayor, New York’s facilities for housing migrants has been pushed to the brink in recent months – with the city having already opened 23 emergency shelters.

Adams said that 38 more shelters are set to be created to deal with the mounting issue.

Speaking on ABC on Sunday, Adams added: ‘This is an American crisis that we need to face — a humanitarian crisis that was made by human hands, by some of the governors in the southern states.’

At least six busses of asylum seekers arrived in New York from Texas on Sunday – while shelters in the city reached ‘breaking point.’ In total, over 11,000 migrants have arrived in the city since May – 2,500 of which were sent on busses by Gov Abbott.

Adams revealed to WCBS that his team are looking into potentially housing the thousands of people bussed into the Big Apple on cruise ships.

He added: ‘We examined everything from the legality of using any type of cruise ship for temporary housing.’

This comes as Republicans have stepped up their attacks on the Biden administration as they try to make immigration the theme of November’s midterm elections.
