Miles portrays Jeff, a criminal turned emotion-altering drug tester for Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), in the dismally-reviewed sci-fi thriller premiering this Friday on Netflix.

‘[Steve] is kind of half-hippie, half-mad scientist,’ Teller explained on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday.

‘All the inmates in this facility voluntarily go there instead of serving prison time. They’re all criminals, and we are under the experimentation of Chris Hemsworth. A lot of different drugs and some are fun, some are terrifying.’

The Offer producer-star added: ‘So that’s kind of the premise – how we deal with inmates too and how we should deal with criminals. If it’s really about reformation then why are we putting them in a prison system where they don’t… I don’t think they come out of prison being model citizens. I don’t think that’s really what our prison system is doing, so there are some larger themes.’

Spiderhead marks Miles’ third film with Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed him in Top Gun: Maverick in 2018-2019 and Only the Brave in 2016-2017.

The R-rated dystopian film is based on George Saunders’ 2010 story Escape from Spiderhead in The New Yorker.

Teller also made sure to pose with his castmates Daniel Reader, Jurnee Smollett, Mark Paguio, Stephen Tongun, and Joey Vieira.

The packed screening took place at New York City’s sole-surviving single-screen cinema, which has been operated by Netflix since 2019.

The Sundance Jury Prize winner will next conclude his role as The Godfather producer Albert S. Ruddy in the 10th and final episode of Michael Tolkin’s seventies-set series The Offer, which airs Thursday on Paramount+.
