Gold Coast mother fined $1,161 after chest twisted seatbelt in her car
- Gold Coast mother handed $1,000 fine
- Seatbelt was twisted across her chest
- She claims her ‘boob got in the way’
A Gold Coast mother has been left outraged after being slapped with a $1,161 fine for a situation she claims to have had ‘no control over’.
Margaret Bowen, from Pimpana, was fined after her chest caused a twist in her seatbelt while travelling on Brisbane Road, Bundama, on August 8.
The infringement notice said Ms Bowen had been fined for not wearing a seatbelt properly adjusted or fastened while riding in the passenger seat.
Ms Bowen was left outraged and complained about the hefty fine on a local community Facebook group.
‘I had the belt on properly over the shoulder, across the chest and buckled in,’ she explained.
‘My boob got in the way and caused what looks like a slight twist.
‘I really can’t believe I received the fine for something I feel I have no control over.’
The Gold Coast mum said she was even more vigilant about seatbelts after her daughter was involved in a serious car accident a few months ago.
Ms Bowen has contested the fine, which she believes is ‘not warranted’.
‘People are being fined for things that are sometimes beyond their control and sometimes, as in my case, are not warranted,’ she said.
‘People are struggling enough and to be fined this amount for not breaking a law is ridiculous.
‘Mistakes will and are being made. These cameras do not give the full picture.’
Dozens of Pimpana locals expressed outrage at the fine.
‘Jeez, imagine the boobs getting in a way of a fine,’ one empathised.
Another added: ‘This is bureaucracy gone mad. Contest it.’
Daily Mail Australia contacted the Queensland Treasury for comment.
