Adrian Portelli, aka ‘Mr Lambo’, has spoken out about why he bid $100,000 against himself during Sunday night’s The Block auctions.
The self-proclaimed ‘billionaire’ bid $4.2million on sisters Eliza and Liberty’s property and then made the odd move of bidding against himself – which has never happened on the show before.
Speaking with Daily Mail Australia at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, Adrian said the move was ‘all fun and games’.
‘I saw the other potential bidders contacting their clients. And I just raised a bit just to kill the competition,’ he said.
‘It’s all fun and games, at the end of the day, the contestants are the ones that are getting the money.
‘They’ve worked hard over the last three months… if I wasn’t there, they wouldn’t have won as much money… I’m very proud to be able to give them that opportunity.’
The bidder noted that he’s involved in the auctions due to ‘personal reasons’.
‘It’s all fun and games for me,’ he repeated.
‘It’s all a marketing strategy for me.’
Adrian also had a strong message for the haters, especially those who slammed his bidding move on Sunday.
‘At the end of the day, you do what you want with your money, and I’ll do what I want with my money,’ he said.
Many fans of the show have criticised Adrian for outbidding himself by putting in an offer of $4.3million and winning the auction.
‘Someone just casually outbidding their own bid by $100,000 meanwhile the rest of us are struggling to buy groceries,’ one person wrote on X.
‘The bids this season are making it hard to watch, it’s not competitive just a splash of cash. Makes me sad but also feel a bit sick lol #theblock.’
Another commented: ‘Adrian Portelli outbidding himself is such douchebag move lol #TheBlock.’
‘Why is Adrian Portelli outbidding himself. I don’t understand #TheBlock,’ a third said.
Another wrote: ‘I don’t understand why Adrian kept bidding against himself on house 2. The auctioneer dragged it out, just loving the spot light a little too much.’
‘I’m kind of sad Adrian outbid himself twice on the girls house and didn’t put that money to a little extra bid over at Leslie and Kyle’s #TheBlock It would have been nice to see them get a little more. The girls were good with the $800,000,’ one said.
Adrian also purchased House 4 for $5million, with Steph and Gian walking away with $1.65 million profit plus prize money of $100,000.
Despite helping two teams net a combined $2.7million in profits, Adrian wasn’t done showing off his deep pockets as he swooped in to scoop up Kyle and Leslie’s home.
House 1 had a reserve of $2.97million, and there was hope as Danny Wallis had not yet bought a house, and neither had celebrity bidder Dave Hughes.
However, Kyle and Leslie’s house struggled to make the reserve with the auction absolutely crawling before Adrian jumped in, taking the price to $3.1 million.
