Neighbours finale causes controversy due to 14-year age gap between newlyweds Toadie and Melanie: ‘She’s too old!’

The highly-anticipated Neighbours finale centered around Toadie’s wedding to Melanie. 

But viewers of the show admitted they were a little disappointed at the storyline because of the 14-year age gap between the pair. 

Some fans flocked to Twitter to share their frustrations, with one saying that Melanie is ‘too old’ for Toadie.

‘Haven’t watched Neighbours in years, but just turned over and that woman looks way too old for Toadie!’ one fan tweeted.

‘Wait a minute… I haven’t watched Neighbours (RIP) since 2002 when I started full-time work so, forgive me, but Toadie is marrying Melanie? Isn’t she old enough to be his Mum?!’ another scathingly said. 

‘In neighbours why is Toadie marrying that old women Melanie she is well in her 50s & Toadie is only in his early 40s could they not of found a younger women for Toadie just in her early 30s? Melanie is far to [sic] old for kids it’s like Toadie marrying a grandmother,’ another added.

After two decades of storylines which saw his wife Dee go missing on their honeymoon, his second wife Sonya tragically die from cancer, and Dee coming back from the dead, Toadie’s marriage was the perfect end point for the soap after 37 years on air.

Toadie and Melanie got hitched in a ceremony officiated by the lake by his old friend Susan Kennedy, before a party on Ramsay Street to celebrate.

The bride recited emotional vows to Toadie as their friends looked on, telling him: ‘Before I met you, I thought I was done. Finito! Send in the clowns! She’s never going to meet anyone ever again!

Actress Lucinda previously said that she was surprised herself that their characters were paired up due to the age gap. 

‘I wasn’t expecting it with the age gap,’ she said, according to What to Watch.

‘But I think it’s a fabulous pairing. The shenanigans they get up to are pretty funny,’ she added. 

Meanwhile Ryan said he was ‘loving’ the storyline. 

‘Lucinda is probably even funnier than her character Melanie. She has a fantastic energy and everyone is smiling when she’s on set,’ he said.
