YG Entertainment’s forthcoming K-pop girl group, BABYMONSTER, is preparing for their highly anticipated debut.
However, concerns have surfaced about the age of one of the girl group’s members.
This week, YG released a series of teasers to promote BABYMONSTER’s upcoming debut, beginning with photos and video of 14-year-old group member, Chiquita, who hails from Thailand.
In these visuals, Chiquita sports tiny, cut-off shorts showing off her long legs, with a torn up top, dark makeup with bright orange hair.
While K-pop fans gushed over BABYMONSTER’s debut on social media, some commenters raised concerns about Chiquita’s more mature styling and said that she’s ‘too young’ to debut.
These fans are apprehensive about the perceived maturity in Chiquita’s styling, speculating that YG Entertainment might be aiming to portray her as older than her actual age.
As conversations progressed online, the controversy surrounding Chiquita’s styling intensified, sparking debates among fans about the appropriateness of these choices for a young idol.
These debates highlighted the contradiction between the presented styling and the industry’s usual standards for debuting young idols.
‘Okay, don’t get me wrong, Chiquita is very talented. LOOOOVEEEE her voice, but she’s way too young,’ wrote one.
‘Seriously, she’s too young to debut and I’m not saying that she doesn’t deserve to debut, but she’s just… too young,’ added another.
‘Damn only one Babymonster member is of same age as me?? All of the rest are so young I feel old,’ lamented one.
YG Entertainment teased BABYMONSTER’s debut last month, with a slated November launch date.
Originally planned for a debut in September, the company made the decision to postpone the group’s launch to a later date.
In an October statement, a representative from YG Entertainment clarified that the postponement was due to considerations related to their debut track.
‘We paid careful attention in selecting the title track in order to repay with the best result. Consequently, the [girl group’s] debut was slightly delayed from September as we originally informed, and we ask for [fans’] understanding,’ the representative said.
Other members of BABYMONSTER include Ahyeon, Haram, Rora, Pharita, Ruka, and Asa, originating from various countries such as South Korea, Japan, and Thailand.
BABYMONSTER introduced their pre-debut track ‘Dream’ on May 14.
Notably, the group stands as YG Entertainment’s latest girl group following the debut of BLACKPINK in 2016 and 2NE1 in 2009.
