New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern shuts down Karl Stefanovic’s bold offer on the Today show: ‘That’s a hard no’

He is known for making awkward gags while speaking to world leaders.

And Today host Karl Stefanovic put his foot in it again on Friday when he interviewed New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

After wrapping up a fairly serious discussion about Ms Ardern’s visit to Sydney, he couldn’t help but joke about his country’s long tradition of ‘claiming’ successful New Zealanders as honourary Aussies.

‘We love welcoming Kiwis here [in Australia], and especially claiming the good ones as our own…’ Stefanovic said.

Ms Ardern was surprised by the suggestion but laughed good-naturedly, before Karl told her: ‘You could end up an Australian one day.’

The New Zealand leader shook her head firmly and replied: ‘No, there’s no prospect of that happening… Thank you, though.’

Leila McKinnon, who was filling in for Allison Langdon, interrupted: ‘That’s the firmest answer we’ve had this morning.’

Ms Ardern squirmed on the couch before answering firmly: ‘That’s a hard no.’

But Stefanovic wouldn’t let the subject go, and asked again: ‘Do you want to think about it?’

Ms Ardern, who was uncomfortable at this point, replied: ‘No. Thank you, though.’

She is visiting Sydney for talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
