New Zelda game out this year, but it’s a Hyrule Warriors prequel to Breath Of The Wild

Nintendo has surprise-announced another new Switch game, as they apologise for the lack of news on Breath Of The Wild 2.

If there was any hope left that Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 would be released this year it’s just been extinguished, as Nintendo announce new spin-off title Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity.

The game will, obviously, be similar to the original Hyrule Warriors – itself a pseudo crossover between Zelda and the Dynasty Warriors series – but it’ll also act as a prequel to Breath Of The Wild, depicting the Great Calamity that took place 100 years before the game started.

That’s not going to have a happy ending as it ends up with almost everyone dead and Link and Zelda taken out of the picture for a whole century, but hey… at least you get to play as the four champions Daruk, Mipha, Revali, and Urbosa.

Dynasty Warriors and its spin-offs are very popular in Japan but always have a mixed reception in the West (we’re certainly not fans) but at least with this one the visuals are interesting and the large scale battles make sense in the context of the story.

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma introduced the game and said that although Tecmo Koei will, as usual, be the developer they’ve been working with Nintendo much more closely than normal.

Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity will be released on 20 November and will presumably be Nintendo’s main Christmas release, alongside next week’s Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

Aonuma also commented on Breath Of The Wild 2 itself, which hasn’t been seen or mentioned since it was first announced at E3 in June of last year.

‘In order to make the vast world you enjoyed exploring in the original game even more impressive, the team is working hard on its development, so you’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can provide more updates’, said Aonuma.

That could mean almost anything but at this point, and considering Nintendo usually doesn’t attend the Tokyo Game Show, the best bet for seeing anything new this year will be The Game Awards in December.
