Olivia Newton-John has opened up about ‘living with cancer’ and losing friends to the disease in a new interview with the Mirror.

The 73-year-old, who has been diagnosed with cancer three times since 1992, recently lost close friend Kelly Preston to breast cancer.

Olivia famously starred alongside Kelly’s husband John Travolta in Grease and has been friends with the couple for decades.

‘John and Kelly chose to keep their journey private. So I honoured that, and I won’t discuss any of that,’ she told the Mirror.

‘But, of course, I care about him greatly and the family, and they’re doing as well as can be expected.’

She added: ‘The death of my friends has only strengthened my resolve to find a world beyond cancer.’

As for her own journey, Olivia insists that she’s ‘doing fantastic’ after weaning herself off morphine by using cannabis.

Olivia is currently living with stage-four metastatic breast cancer.

In January, the Australian icon gave fans a health update and revealed that her tumours had shrunk in size.

She told The Sunday Telegraph that using medicinal cannabis and natural remedies in addition to conventional medicine had improved her health.

‘My tumours are receding or they’re going away or they’re staying the same, on a Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer — that’s pretty amazing,’ she said.

‘If I hadn’t had the experience I’m having with cannabis I wouldn’t be able to talk about it.’

Olivia, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and twice before in 1992 and 2013, has spent years lobbying the Australian government to approve the use of medicinal cannabis for cancer patients.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston met on the 1989 film The Experts and began dating; he proposed on New Year’s Eve 1991 at the Palace Hotel in Gstaad, Switzerland.

They were married later that year and went on to have three children together.

After almost 29 years of marriage, Kelly died at age 57 on July 12, 2020 after a two-year battle with breast cancer.
