‘It was insane’: Olivia Wilde admits she directed parts of Don’t Worry Darling while wearing a BIKINI… as she juggled a supporting role in the film

As both the director and a supporting actor of her drama-riddled movie Don’t Worry Darling – Olivia Wilde had a lot on her plate.

The 38-year-old beauty has opened about the ‘insanity’ of having to film scenes in character, and then rushing off to her director’s chair while still dressed in costume – which at times would be a revealing a bikini set.

‘It was insane,’ Wilde told Stephen Colbert on Wednesday.

‘I would be acting in the scene, in a bikini, which is a bit weird, getting up, holding my daughter, running over to the monitor, talking to my DP, then the other producer’s telling me about COVID shutdowns and all sorts of insanity and then sitting down, calling action and doing it again. It was wild.’

Wilde plays Bunny in the Stepford Wives-esque thriller, which has been plagued with bad reviews, but is still on course to bring in some decent figures at the box office.

The actor and director also spoke about about how she cast her five-year-old daughter, Daisy, whom she shares with ex-partner Jason Sudeikis, in a cameo role as her character’s child in the film.

‘There are many funny lines of you yelling at your children off camera, going “Don’t do that! Don’t hit her.”

‘Was that a natural way you would speak to your children?’ he asked.

‘I was a little meaner in the movie than I would be to her,’ Olivia revealed. ‘It was like the drunk 1950s version of me I guess.’

Stephen also shared a behind-the-scenes photo of Olivia at the camera and Daisy by her side.

‘I really loved that she was seeing me in that light.’ the proud mother admitted, ‘Like somewhere, subconsciously this is seeping in, that her mother is in charge and is supported by this awesome crew.’

Olivia also unveiled another family connection in the thriller.  Her character, Bunny, was styled based on the actor’s grandmother, ‘who was a really fabulous woman, who was incredibly brilliant and she largely lived to create a kind of fabulous life for her family. She was a wonderful wife, a very glamorous wife.

‘She was very well educated, she studied poetry, she was very well read, but her existence was largely based around her husband. And I thought, really, what it would be like to get into her skin, so though I could, kind of, judge the lack of autonomy at the time, it also seemed like a really fabulous life, like, they partied a lot.’

The actor divulged that her siblings had seen the film and recognized the homage to their grandmother right away. She thinks Grandma would approve. ‘I think she would have been really proud of it. I think, you know, if I told her that I would be directing movies at this scale, I think she wouldn’t have believe it was possible. So that’s cool. ‘
