Olivia Wilde hits back at reports of a feud with ‘sensational’ Florence Pugh

‘I have nothing but respect for her talent’: Olivia Wilde hits back at reports of a feud with ‘sensational’ Florence Pugh – and doubles down on claims she fired Shia LaBeouf after he issued her an ‘ultimatum’

Olivia Wilde shot down rumors of a feud with Florence Pugh while addressing drama around Don’t Worry Darling on Wednesday on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The 38-year-old director while dressed casually chic in a white T-shirt and loose black trousers was asked by Stephen, 58, about her relationship with her leading lady Florence, 26.

‘People say you are feuding with Florence Pugh. Is there anything you want to say to that?,’ Stephen bluntly asked her.

Olivia chalked it up to ‘another weird rumor’ surrounding the film along with ‘spitgate’ involving her boyfriend Harry Styles, 28, and Chris Pine, 42.

Stephen referred to his notes, which included the question, ‘Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine? Why or why not? Support your answer.’

A laughing Olivia said, ‘He did not, but I think it’s a perfect example of people will look for drama anywhere they can.’

She definitively added, ‘Harry did not spit on Chris, in fact,’ while Stephen joked, ‘Only time will tell.’

‘No, he really didn’t!’ Olivia said with a laugh.

She said the video was an example of people seeing what they want to see and described it as ‘clickbait’.

‘So no tension between you and Florence Pugh?,’ Stephen then followed up.

‘I have nothing but respect for Florence’s talent. She’s fantastic. She’s on the set of her movie Dune right now. There’s nothing cooler than a busy actress. I have nothing against her for any reason,’ Olivia said.

‘People pointed out that she was having an Aperol spritz during the press conference and didn’t show up for it,’ Stephen said referencing Florence skipping a press event earlier this month during the Venice International Film Festival.

‘They did point that out,’ Olivia agreed.

‘I think what’s funny is like, I don’t feel like my male director colleagues are answering questions about their cast,’ Olivia said to applause from the studio audience at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.

Stephen agreed with her.

‘These are not questions to give a director. They should be talking about the movie itself,’ he said while admitting that he was giving into the appetite by asking her about the rumors.

‘She is sensational in this film. And it is about her being brave enough to listen to the brave people who’ve come before her who everyone else has ignored and trust her instincts,’ Olivia said.

‘And she is the one brave enough to dismantle the system. She is a super hero. And Florence Pugh is as good at dramatic work as she is at action. There are real action sequences sequences in the film. She has a run which I refer to as her “Tom Cruise run.” It’s the most impressive run I’ve ever seen,’ she added.

Olivia also cleared the air about her one-time Don’t Worry Darling co-star Shia LaBeouf, 36, who she claimed was let go from the film, though the actor claims he quit.

When asked if she fired Shia, Olivia said, ‘We had to replace Shia. He is a fantastic actor, but it wasn’t gonna work. When he gave me the ultimatum of, you know, him or Florence, I chose Florence.’

She added, ‘That was him feeling he was stepping away and me feeling like we were moving on without him.’

When Stephen asked if he left in such a way that he could think he quit and she could think he was fired and they were both right, Olivia answered, ‘It’s a question of semantics. It wasn’t going to move forward in a way he wanted it to, so he had to leave.’

Olivia also revealed that her five-year-old daughter Daisy plays her daughter in the film.

She also has eight-year-old son Otis with her former fiance Jason Sudeikis, 47.
