A paedophile who was told by a judge he could go on holiday to Greece while on bail for raping a girl under 13 and sexually abusing another was today jailed for 15 years.

Matthew Thompson, 48, from Monk Bretton, Barnsley, pleaded guilty to assaulting a child under 13 by penetration, sexual assault of a child, sexual activity with a child and taking indecent photographs of a child.

However, he was told at a previous court hearing by Judge Jonathan Gibson that he could still take a pre-booked trip to Kos in October before he was today sentenced at Bradford Crown Court.

The holiday was not mentioned during sentencing and it is understood that the 48-year-old HGV driver never went on the trip.

Sentencing, Recorder James Baird ordered Thompson to serve 15 years and 10 months in jail, plus a year on licence because he was classed as ‘an offender of particular concern’. The 48-year-old was also made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

His offending dates back almost a decade and involved two girls who cannot be identified for legal reasons. Prosecuting, David McGonigal said that the 48-year-old repeatedly had sex with one of the girls after he gave her alcohol and drugs.

Mr McGonigal read out moving victim impact statements written by the girls, in which the complainants described the devastating effects of the abuse on them.

In a pre-sentence report, Thompson, who has previous convictions for sexual offences, was described as ‘a predatory male with a sexual interest in children’ according to Recorder Baird.

Thompson had been hiding that interest over the period of the abuse and preying on two vulnerable young girls.

The judge explained that Thompson bullied and groomed his first victim to satisfy his own sexual desires.

He said: ‘You would give her money to curry favour with her and if she did not do what she was told to do she would be punished.’

The 48-year-old also put the girl in a pair of stockings to gratify his own sexual needs.

Defending, Gillian Batts said that it was very rare for an offender facing such allegations to enter guilty pleas.

She said: ‘It is an acknowledgement from the defendant, by virtue of his guilty pleas, that these things happened and the victims are telling the truth about what happened to them.’

‘The victims did not have to give evidence and did not have to go through the process of being cross-examined and inevitably being called liars.’

Previously, despite acknowledging the seriousness of the offences, Judge Gibson agreed Thompson should be allowed to go on a pre-paid two-week vacation to the Greek island of Kos.

He told the defendant: ‘You’ve pleaded guilty and you will of course get proper credit for your guilty pleas in due course when you’re sentenced.

‘You’ve been on bail and I’m not going to revoke your bail simply because you have entered honest pleas.’

Ms Batts had also pleaded with Judge Gibson to allow him to depart for his holiday, which he was scheduled to return from on October 27.

She suggested the serious nature of the case would make it appropriate for Thompson, of Barnsley, to ‘sign on’ at a police station between 12pm and 2pm on October 28.

Ms Batts advised her client that he would also need to register as a sex offender with the relevant authorities prior to the trip in order to be able to leave the UK.

Completing the ten-minute hearing, Judge Gibson had ordered Thompson to report to Barnsley police station on October 28 as part of his bail conditions.

He added: ‘As you know you are now subject to the sex offender registration provisions and you’ll need to report to the police to do that before you go.’
