An elderly paraglider pilot swam to shore and clambered on to rocks after crashing into the ocean off Sydney’s northern beaches.

A rescue operation is underway to evacuate the 91-year-old from a cliff face near Warriewood Beach.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene before 6pm on Sunday after reports the man had crashed his paraglider into the water.

Footage from the scene showed the paraglider being treated by paramedics, seeming alert and relatively uninjured.

He appeared to have a minor cut to his wrist, and NSW police said he injured his wrist and leg in the crash.

‘The man has been checked at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and appears to only have cuts and bruises,’ they said.

The chute and engine have been retrieved from the water.
