PE teacher Belinda Norton shares the four steps she swears by for a healthy and fit year ahead

A PE teacher has shared her four-step process for a healthy 2021, after thousands over-indulged across Christmas and the New Year.

Belinda Norton, 43, from the Gold Coast, said it’s important that you don’t ‘rush’ your body after a period of relaxation over Christmas, but rather you ‘prepare’ it so that you can move forward easily into a new healthy food and fitness routine.

‘A successful result will only occur by taking slower steps on a daily basis as opposed to “cold turkey or that rushing in mindset”,’ Belinda wrote on her website

So what are the four steps to a healthy 2021?

1. Clean out your system

The first thing the PE teacher said we could all benefit from doing is ‘cleaning’ out our systems from sugar, alcohol and any toxins you may have overloaded on during the holiday period.

‘Remove sugars from the system by avoiding any food or drinks with sugar in them from today,’ Belinda wrote.

This includes fruits and any naturally-occurring sugars like honey or stevia.

Instead, the 43-year-old said you should eat plenty of vegetables and wholegrains, and flush your system with as much water as possible to get rid of anything bad.

Cold, room temperature and warm water are all a good idea, and you can add lemon to it to give your metabolism a quick boost.

2. Start slow

Secondly, if you’re taking up any new fitness plans or classes, Belinda said you absolutely must begin slow. 

‘We generally feel heavy after our Christmas and New Year break, as we have all indulged and that is perfectly okay,’ Belinda said.

‘But returning to our fitness activity in this heavy or lacklustre state can cause injury.’

Instead, she said every piece of movement must be ‘aligned’.

For example, the teacher recommends you start with something gentle, whether that’s a long fast walk, light weights, a jog or bike ride.

Do not go to a new class and ‘smash yourself’ if you have not done much training in the past couple of weeks, Belinda warned.

‘Our muscles and ligaments are weak, we are heavier and it can cause some serious injury.’

3. Set your routine and commit

A plan is key to success, and if you don’t make one, you might as well plan to fail.

‘Write it down, plan when all fitness sessions will be completed and share it with the family,’ Belinda said.

You can also write down both your meals and snacks, and make a few snacks in advance so you always have something healthy on hand.

The teacher encourages eating together as a family and talking about the health benefits of food with your kids.

Some of her favourite snacks for adults and children include rice cakes or rice thins with various toppings such as Vegemite and avocado or tuna and avocado or carrot, cucumber and hummus.

4. Embrace a mindset of love and respect 

Finally, Belinda revealed that nothing will change in 2021, unless you change your mindset.

‘I encourage the limit of all discussion of body shape,’ she said.

‘Our mindset is key to our success, and we must only look at positives of our body.’

Belinda said rather than focusing on things like the scales and calories, she instead uses her posture as her gauge of how well she is doing, as well as her digestion.

‘I do not weigh myself nor count calories. Do not weigh yourself as it shares no true value of your health – absolutely none,’ she said.
