A 12-year-old Colorado boy, who was attacked by his pit bull named Diablo – Spanish for devil – is in recovery after he witnessed his grandma be torn apart by his ‘sweetheart’ dog.

Ty and Mary Gehring, his 89-year-old grandmother, were attacked by the 12-year-old’s dog, on September 14. Another pit bull was also involved in the attack but wasn’t identified.

Diablo has lived with Ty since he was just five-years-old – ever since his parents divorced seven years ago. Ty’s dad, who does not want to be identified, called the hound a ‘sweetheart’ while struggling to comprehend the details of the attack.

‘They grew up together that’s why I have a hard time believing that he was any kind of aggressor,’ his dad told Fox 31. ‘For the years that I have known that dog, he was a sweetheart.’

Ty is now recovering from puncture wounds, lacerations and broken pinkies after being airlifted to the hospital last week.

Gehring succumbed to her injuries two days later on September 16.

The father is seeking information about what went wrong before the attack occurred. He said the pit bull and Ty have grown up together since the boy was about 5-years-old

The boy’s father has attempted to piece the attack together and mentally played back when he heard Ty was in the hospital.

‘I get a call from my sister while I’m boarding a plane that Ty was attacked by a dog and that there was a serious injury and he was [air lifted] to the Children’s Hospital,’ his father said.

He later added: ‘When my son was able to talk, I asked him how his grandma was doing and he completely broke down.’

Both victims were immediately taken to the hospital.

Ty’s dad remains clueless about what went wrong, especially after he made his ex-wife extensively research whether Diablo was a ‘fight breed’ before they got the dog seven years ago.

His father called Ty and his grandmother ‘best friends’ as struggles to understand the sequence of events that led to the attack..

‘That was his best friend. Ty just got baptized from his grandma recently, and she has a very active role in his life. She was a very good influence. His grandma was one of the kindest people that you would ever meet in real life.

‘To live a righteous life and then to suffer that, I just am suffering.’

The two pit bulls were taken to a local veterinary hospital for evaluation, according to police. Both dogs were later euthanized.

Similarly, Tya Lucas was almost eaten alive by her beloved pit bull earlier this year.

Lucas, 41, was at home showing off another dog – new puppy Roo – to friend Peter in May when her seven-stone pit bull Hercules lunged at him and sank its teeth into unsuspecting Peter’s neck.

The shocked mom-of-one quickly pried her pooch off of Peter’s back, shoving the bleeding man into the safety of the bathroom and shutting the door.

But in doing so, Tya simply made herself the new target and the frenzied mutt turned on her, tearing off huge chunks of the mother’s right arm and completely devouring her bicep, as well as sinking its teeth into her leg and foot.

Luckily, Tya’s daughter Tana, 20, and her husband Harley, 21, arrived home as the attack was unfolding. Harley was able to wrestle the canine away from Tya and carry the 41-year-old outside, where they signaled a nearby police officer.

Tya, from Lewisville, Texas, said: ‘The police said if I’d passed out in the house, he would have eaten me from my insides. A good two-thirds of my arm was torn off – he ate my entire bicep.’

‘They said they’d seen stabbings, gunshot wounds and they’ve never seen what they saw that day.

‘They put a tourniquet on my arm and the doctor said if he hadn’t been there to do that at that exact moment then I wouldn’t have made it until the ambulance got there.’

Tya was rushed to hospital where she was put on a ventilator for two days. She remained under medical care for 19 days, where she had hundreds of stitches across her arm, leg and foot, and five operations to cut away dead skin.
