A police inspector has appeared in court after being charged with sexually assaulting a woman.

Inspector Michael Sinden, 34, an officer with Sussex Police, appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court today charged with sexual assault by penetration in Eastbourne on March 10, 2022.

Sinden was suspended from duty after being charged with the offence.

Wearing a white shirt, tie and suit trousers, Sinden, of Eastbourne, stood in the dock and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

Sussex Police said the alleged offence last year happened while the officer was off duty.

The force has voluntarily referred the matter to the IOPC who directed that a local investigation by the Professional Standards Department should be conducted.
