Voters in a new Hill-HarrisX poll say they thought the recent Democratic National Convention was more effective than its GOP counterpart, though a plurality of voters said they did not watch either party convention.

A third of registered voters in the survey, 33 percent, said they thought Democrats’ presidential nominating event was more effective compared to 27 percent who said the same of the Republican National Convention.

Four in 10 voters said they did not watch either event, which took place on consecutive weeks in mid-to-late August.

The survey, conducted Aug. 29-31 following the conclusion of the GOP event, found slightly more Democratic voters than Republican voters who said their party’s convention was more effective.

Party organizers had to grapple with conducting mostly virtual conventions this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with both parties relying more heavily on technology than in traditional election years.

Sixty-six percent of Democrats in the Hill-HarrisX poll released Thursday said their convention was more effective compared to 64 percent of Republicans who said the same of their event.

However, independents surveyed in the poll favored the Democratic convention, though that group was also the most likely to say they did not watch either convention.

Twenty-three percent of independents said the Democrats had the more effective convention while 16 percent said the Republican Party’s was more effective.

Sixty-percent of independent voters did not watch either event, according to the poll, while an equal percentage of Democrats and Republicans, 30 percent, said they did not watch the conventions.

The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 971 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
