Easy: While Karly typically bakes from scratch, she concedes that sometimes, a person might not want to gather all the ingredients involved in making a cake that way
While Karly typically bakes from scratch — and shows off her process on TikTok and Instagram — she concedes that sometimes, a person might not want to gather all the ingredients involved in making a cake that way.
So for those times when there’s less on hand — and less time — she suggests simply using boxed cake mix with a few tweaks.
Though she favors Duncan Hines’ Classic White, she says that any cake mix will do.
First, she says, refer to the ingredients on the back — and then swap new ones in.
‘Instead of water, you’re gonna use milk,’ she says, showing herself measuring it out in a later video.
Change it up: First, she says, refer to the ingredients on the back — and then swap new ones in. Instead of water, use the same amount of milk
More swaps: Then increase the number of eggs (she goes from three to five) and swap in butter for oil
Other frequent bakers have suggested a similar trick, explaining that milk gives the cake a denser, richer texture than water.
‘Instead of three eggs, you’re gonna do five eggs,’ she goes on.More eggs add more fat, which makes the cake richer and moister.
Finally, she says, ‘instead of vegetable oil, you’re gonna double the amount and use melted butter.’
Other proponents of using butter instead of oil argue that it gives the cake better flavor and also makes it denser — which can be especially useful for cupcakes if they’re being weighed down with frosting. However, other says that swapping one-to-one measurements is the way to go.
On the other hand, those that favor oil say it makes for a moister cake.
‘Do this, mix it, bake it as regular, and I promise you they will come out so much better,’ Karly says

Mix it up: she said it works for any cake mix, so home bakers can try chocolate or strawberry too
‘Do this, mix it, bake it as regular, and I promise you they will come out so much better,’ Karly says.
Several viewers who have already tested out the swaps have comments to share their thoughts.
‘I made the cupcakes with cake mix and I followed your instructions and Oh My God they were deeeeeelicious ! Definitely my go to from now on,’ wrote one.
‘We made this cake after watching your video. Omg! Our family ate in 2 days!’ said another.
‘I just made it, I used strawberry cake mix too, thank you for sharing!!! said a third.
