Rachel Brosnahan says she got a ‘corset-related injury’ from her Marvelous Mrs. Maisel costumes

In her role as the Marvelous Mrs Maisel, she always looks picture perfect.

But Rachel Brosnahan, the Emmy award-winning star of the Amazon show, has revealed her vintage inspired wardrobe has left her with a ‘corset-related injury’.

‘We talk so fast on the show that to get all the words out you can’t really take very many breaths,’ the actress, 29, recounted to James Corden at The Late Late Show on Monday night.

Let's talk corsets: Rachel Brosnahan, the Emmy award-winning actress behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, visited The Late Late Show along with Rupaul on Monday night and shared some rather shocking details about what's involved in nailing the costumes for the show

‘I think I wasn’t breathing a lot and I was a bit constrained, and apparently some of my ribs are sort of fused together a little bit.’

‘Oh my goodness,’ fellow guest Rupaul, 59, exclaimed.

‘…And I can’t take super deep breaths anymore,’ Brosnahan added.

When Rupaul gasped at this in disbelief, Rachel was quick to dispel any panic or true dismay.

‘It’s really fine guys. Champagne problems,’ she joked.

Brosnahan stars as Midge Maisel, the lead character in the period drama, an upscale Upper West Side, New York City socialite who journeys from being a housewife to a standup comedian in the ’50s.

From the beginning, Rachel and her costars were required to wear the fabulous fashions of the time, which of course requires strikingly petite waists and hourglass figures.

And Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Mrs. Maisel, is known for loading her show’s characters with tons and tons of dialogue — she also is responsible for the talky show Gilmore Girls.

It seems that particular combination spelled trouble for Rachel’s ribs.

The pains of wearing corsets have come up many times before, from Emma Stone bemoaning to Graham Norton about the fact that ‘for the first month, I couldn’t breathe’ on the set of her 2018 costume drama The Favourite, to Kate Winslet’s iconic scene early in 1997’s Titanic, when she’s being tied fiercely into her corset by her onscreen mother, played by Frances Fisher.

Rupaul also discussed the pains and demands of various costumes, like the drag garb he is famous for wearing and how difficult it was to remain in it for ’15, 16-hour days’ while shooting his new Netflix series AJ And The Queen.

At the very least, Brosnahan and her co-actresses on the show should know their suffering wasn’t for naught; The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was the 2019 Emmy winner for Outstanding Period Costumes.
