Republican Lee Zeldin and Democrat Kathy Hochul TIED in shock poll in New York Governor race

Republican Lee Zeldin and Democrat Kathy Hochul are TIED in shock poll in New York Governor race – after she said surging crime in the state was a GOP ‘conspiracy’

  • Zeldin and Gov. Kathy Hochul are tied at 48 in new Trafalgar Group survey
  • The GOP-leaning poll correctly forecast Trump’s 2016 win
  • Hochul drew a visit from President Joe Biden last week
  • New York Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney finds himself in a close race Democrats hold a two-to-one registration advantage in New York

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul finds herself tied with Republican challenger Rep. Lee Zeldin in a new survey released just a week before Election Day in a state where Democrats have a huge built-in advantage.

The poll, by Trafalgar Group, comes after three successive surveys showed a lead for Hochul, who assumed office upon the resignation of Gov. Andrew Cuomo amid sexual harassment allegations last August.

Hochul, who drew a visit from President Biden last week where both Democrats touted new outside investments in microchip manufacturing, is now just below 50 per cent in the RealClearPolitics poll average.

Her average lead is still about 4 per cent, which could be enough to hold even if a ‘red wave’ emerges nationwide, although Hochul’s hectic campaign schedule is meant to keep that from happening.

Trafalgar uses different methods than other pollsters, allowing people to participate through brief surveys by phone, text, or email. The group says the tactics allow it to locate harder-to-reach voters. There were widespread polling flops in 2016 as organizations struggled to pick up Trump supporters who may have been resistant to traditional polling methods.

Hochul signaled she knows she has a race on her hands in the state with a two-to-one Democratic registration advantage. She visited a Bronx subway station Tuesday morning, with plans for a rally in Brooklyn.

On Monday, Zeldin was on Hochul’s home turf upstate, visiting a town north of her hometown of Buffalo. He stumped with Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who snatched the state out of Democratic hands with his attacks on Critical Race Theory in schools.

The issue of crime has become a political lightening rod in the race between Hochul (left) and Zeldin (right)

He stumped with Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis over the weekend. ‘This is about all of you taking control your government again,’ Zeldin said Monday. He says he wants to declare a ‘crime emergency’ in the state.

Hochul was in Harlem Monday, campaigning with Democratic Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Adriano Espaillat, and ripping Zeldin’s attacks on New York’s crime record.

‘Don’t come here today and tell us that you’ve got a tough on crime plan that’s just soft and squishy on guns,’ she said, ripping his plans to arm school safety officers or even teachers.

‘We’ve been in the streets. We’ve been focusing on this the entire time I’ve been governor and we’re going to continue focusing on it,’ she said.

Democrats are trying to cling to control of Congress with visits and late financial investments even in blue-leaning strongholds. New York Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who heads the party’s House campaign arm, finds himself in a close race in his district north of New York City.
