The actress rose to prominence after she was cast in primetime show The Affair as Alison Bailey in 2014 opposite actor Dominic West, 52, who played Noah Solloway, before she left suddenly in 2019.

She told The Sunday Times the most difficult part of filming intimate scenes in The Affair was the lack of instruction, adding: ‘Since #MeToo… intimacy coaches are really scientific about sex scenes.

‘But before nothing would be said. It would be about making it up as you go along.’

She continued: ‘No one wanted to discuss [sex scenes], so the actors were invariably left to create something on the day and that’s desperately awkward. It’s a horrible place to be.’

Ruth added that filming sex scenes that didn’t seem authentic felt ‘exploitative’.

The star insists she now feels fine about the scenes she was required to film, describing them as an unfortunate ‘rite of passage’ for people in the industry.

Last year, Ruth produced and starred in film True Things, employing intimacy coach Ita O’Brien to talk the actors through the sex scenes.

It walked the stars through step by step, prompting them where to put their hands and where to look so everyone felt comfortable and not ‘over-objectified’.

She added that she thought sex scenes are a reminder that an actor’s body is not their own as stars are objectified.
