Sam Darnold sent home from Jets practice with illness

The Jets will be missing some key faces at practice on Wednesday.

Quarterback Sam Darnold will not practice after being sent home because he is dealing with strep throat, coach Adam Gase said.

“He’s sick,” Gase said. “He was sent home by the training staff. He tried to come in and work today and he’s still kind of contagious so we had to send him home.”

Gase said Darnold will be fine for Monday’s game against the Browns.

The Jets have an extra day of practice this week since they are playing on Monday night, so they can be extra cautious.

Safety Jamal Adams is also not practicing because of soreness.

“As we got further away from the game, he got a little sore with kind of his hip/back kind of deal,” Gase said.” We should be in good shape here as we get further away from the last game. He’s just still too sore to go.”

The more serious injuries the Jets are keeping an eye on are inside linebacker C.J. Mosley (groin) and rookie defensive lineman Quinnen Williams (ankle), who both left Sunday’s game against the Bills. Neither player will practice Wednesday, but Gase sounded encouraged about their progress.

“It’s giving us good hope with both of those guys that they’re still a chance for those guys to play on Monday,” Gase said.
