But Sam Worthington has revealed he was in the running for another very iconic role – only to lose it due to an awful audition’.

He explained a screen test involved wearing a tuxedo and acting out a scene from 1963 classic From Russia With Love, in which Sean Connery starred on 007.

‘So you [have to] walk in, and there’s the girl in the bed. You charm her … And I couldn’t get the killer of Bond down, I just couldn’t get the charm, I couldn’t charm her. The suit didn’t fit man,’ Worthington said.

Despite being born in the UK to British parents, the actor said his attempt at Bond’s English accent was ‘laughable’.

‘I said, ‘”If I do an Australian I’m gonna be the next George Lazenby,” he said, referencing the Australian actor who only starred in one Bond film.

‘He only did one and I didn’t want to be like that. So I tried British. It was awful.

‘I sounded like Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins. I remember [director] Martin [Campbell] going, ‘Just do your normal voice. It’s all cool man.’

Worthington added that both Sam Neill and Mel Gibson auditioned at various points in their careers.

Despite his lack of success getting the role of Britain’s top agent, just a few years later Worthington was cast in Avatar – which is the highest-grossing film of all time.

The role was initially offered to Matt Damon, who was given the option of 10 per cent of the profits, but turned it down.

Daniel Craig, who starred in five Bond films, has said No Time To Die, which was released last year will be his last.

Many names of actors have been touted to replace him, including Brigerton heartthrob Rege-Jean Page, Tom Hardy and James Norton among the actors believed to be in the running.

Currently the bookies favourites are Henry Cavil and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
