John Safran has revealed he suffered a serious health scare after vaping and smoking cigarettes for the past year.

The 50-year-old had a series of ‘mini-heart attacks’ over several months while writing his latest book, Puff Piece.

After getting back pain and struggling to walk long distances, John said he decided to see a doctor who referred him to a cardiologist.

The cardiologist confirmed he had heart problems.

‘For months I have been having little heart attacks, brushing them off and getting on with the day,’ he wrote in a recent blog post.

‘[The doctor] said he usually books an x-ray to see if a surgical procedure called an angiogram is necessary. But in this case, he suggests skipping the angiogram. He books me in for the surgery.’

Later that week, John had a set of stents unblocking his arteries.

John said he had been vaping and smoking while working on his new book over the past year.

In a video shared to TikTok, he explained: ‘I had never smoked for a sustained period before writing this book.’

‘I had quite a serious health scare and the cardiologist did say he reckons me huffing cigarettes or vape for a year nonstop was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back.’

John shot to fame in the early 2000s, following the success of his ABC TV series Race Around the World.

In 2017, the political comedian turned his attention to writing, releasing a non-fiction novel called Depends What You Mean by Extremist.

John previously put his body on the line by participating in a real-life exorcism for his 2004 ABC series John Safran vs God.
