Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy says she had intense mood swings while using hormonal birth control: ‘I just didn’t even recognize myself’

Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy reflected on the negative side effects that she has experienced over the years after using hormonal birth control.

The 35-year-old actress told People that it was difficult for her to find a birth control method that worked for her body after first being prescribed hormonal contraceptive pills when she was a teenager.

‘It was like, “Here’s the pill, this is the thing that you use,”‘ the Emmy Award winner said.

She continued, ‘So kind of no questions asked, my young 16-year-old brain was like, “I trust this doctor, they want what’s best for me.” And I started on the pill.’

Annie said that she continued to use the pill for several years, during which she suffered from intense mood swings.

‘I would have goblin days where I just didn’t even recognize myself; I was feeling really, really sad, really down, really anxious,’ the Canada native said.

She added, ‘Slowly I started putting two and two together and realizing that it was the pill that was causing these really big ups and downs.’

After making the connection between her mood swings and the pill, Annie consulted her doctor who switched her to the NuvaRing, a small, flexible vaginal ring that releases a continuous low dose of hormones to help prevent pregnancy.

The Russian Doll performer said that she continued to feel ‘uneasy’ about the side effects over the years and eventually quit using birth control entirely, a decision that she described as ‘a gamble.’

Annie said that she finally stopped feeling ‘feeling guilty or scared’ about the effects of the birth control that she was using once she partnered with pharmaceutical company Evofem Biosciences and started taking their non-hormonal birth control Phexxi.

The Kevin Can F*** Himself actress said she encourages women to advocate for themselves during their doctor’s visits and to learn about the different birth control methods that are available.

‘There are so many options out there,’ she said.  ‘Maybe Phexxi isn’t for everybody, but it is an option that I had not heard about at all.

‘And I genuinely hadn’t heard about anything but the pill and the NuvaRing — it was limited to those forms of birth control.

Annie continued, ‘And that, to me, is really disappointing because different women have different needs and different levels of comfort about what they put into their body. And there are so many products out there that we aren’t educated about.’

The actress added, ‘That was the struggle, you know, the content really wasn’t there and I feel like the doctors, no one really had the desire to pursue any kind of education with me.’

The star said that she hopes to normalize the conversation around birth control following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade in June.

‘I can’t emphasize enough how strongly I believe in everyone’s right to bodily autonomy,’ Annie told People.

‘It really does blow my mind that everyone has sex and most people aren’t having sex in order to have a baby — it happens billions of times a day on this earth — and still we are so trepidatious talking about birth control and body parts.’

Annie, who starred in a commercial for Phexxi last September, explained that she is surprised that there is still a stigma around many words and topics regarding women’s health care.

‘The fact that I did this commercial last year and I said the word vagina in 2021 and it caused this kind of ripple that like “Oh my God, she said the word vagina in a commercial.” That, to me, is still very troubling,’ she said.

‘And so I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to be working in this capacity and to just do everything I can do to normalize these conversations because they should be normal and no one should feel guilty or anxious or upset about talking about these things. It’s so, so crucial.’
