A school caretaker has admitted raping a nine-year-old girl before killing her with a hammer and burying her under a slab of concrete in Russia.
Shavkat Shayakhmedov, 61, had a long history of sex attacks, according to law enforcement.
These included raping a girl, 15, who was a pupil at the school where he worked.
The body of nine-year-old Viktoria Gnedova was found buried seven feet beneath a concrete slab in the cellar of her apartment block. Shayakhmedov also lived in the building.
The grim discovery was made three months after the little girl vanished from Kazar village in the western Oryol region.
Shayakhmedov had been a suspect since day one of the investigation and later failed a polygraph test, according to reports.
However, it took several weeks to find Viktoria’s body and during this time Shayakhmedov joined the thousands of volunteers searching for the missing girl.

Sources described the spot where her body was eventually found as being a specially dug tunnel under a load bearing wall that had been covered with a concrete slab.
Sniffer dogs located the child’s remains after three tonnes of rubbish had been removed from the cellar of the apartment building and surrounding area.
Law enforcement said that Shayakhmedov confessed to having repeatedly raped Viktoria, promising to buy her a bicycle if she remained silent.

‘When he was taken into custody, he explained that Viktoria went to find him in the basement demanding that he buy the promised bike,’ a police source said, recounting the details of Shayakhmedov’s confession.
‘A conflict arose between them, during which he became angry and struck the child several blows on the head with a hammer.
‘The hammer was found with her remains.’
At Viktoria’s funeral on September 17, the priest offered comfort to the girl’s family, saying ‘no rapist will go unpunished’.
Law enforcement highlighted Shayakmedov’s long history of sexual assaults, saying he confessed to raping a 15-year-old girl in a sauna in 2018.
He also admitted to raping two girls, aged seven and nine, in 2005, and is suspected of a sex attack on the daughter of a former partner.
He said he ‘befriended’ children by buying them gifts and sweets.
Shayakmedov, who is married, is being held on suspicion of murder and has been charged with a series of sex crimes against minors.
