A curious emu has brought traffic to a standstill after it wandered onto a busy road, staring at stunned drivers as they cruised past.

The video, recorded and posted to Twitter by a driver named Bianca, showed the animal calmly strolling down the road in the Macedon Ranges, an hour north of Melbourne.

The emu appeared to be very inquisitive about its new-found fame, peering into the car windows as it walked by.

The alarmed mother can be heard telling her children ‘it’s going to poke my eyes out’ as the emu approached their car.

She then greeted the bird, while a young child can be heard shouting ‘close the window’ in panic.

The giant flightless animal paused briefly to look into the car before continuing on its way.

It’s unclear how the emu ended up in the middle of the busy road, although it appeared to be completely unfazed by the traffic around it.

Other clips posted to social media show the animal calmly weaving in between the cars, with the drivers all come to a standstill.

‘Why would there be an emu f***ing the road?’ asked Bianca in one clip. ‘Why is it always me?’

The footage triggered laughs online.

‘Is that the new toll collector, he looks mean as f**k,’ joked one man.

‘Just going for a stroll…not a care in the world. Your commentary had me in stitches though,’ said another.

‘Looks like it’s doing a random vehicle inspection or about to breathalise someone,’ added a third.
