Simu Liu calls out Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese for bashing Marvel movies: ‘They don’t get to point their nose at me or anyone’

While promoting his new book Cinema Speculation, Quentin Tarantino joined a relatively new chorus of filmmakers – including Martin Scorsese – in bashing Marvel Studios superhero movies… and now Simu Liu is fighting back.

The 59-year-old filmmaker revealed in a recent interview that the ‘Marvelization of Hollywood’ meant that the characters – such as Captain America and Thor – are the stars, not the actual actors (Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth).

One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest stars – Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu – blasted both Tarantino and Scorsese for their assertions in a pair of tweets on Tuesday.

‘If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie,’ Liu began in his tweet, referring to Shang-Chi’s $432 million worldwide gross.

‘I am in awe of their filmmaking genius. They are transcendent auteurs. But they don’t get to point their nose at me or anyone,’ Liu continued.

He added in another tweet, ‘No movie studio is or ever will be perfect. But I’m proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere.’

‘I loved the “Golden Age” too.. but it was white as hell,’ Liu concluded.

Tarantino’s disparaging remarks towards the Marvel Cinematic Universe are the latest since Martin Scorsese seemingly started this ‘trend’ in 2019, when he said the superhero movies are, ‘not cinema.’

‘I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,’ Scorsese said of MCU movies, while promoting his Netflix film The Irishman.

‘Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,’ he added.

‘It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being,’ Scorsese said.

Liu is already attached to return as his Marvel character in a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the highly-anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars.
