You may not know her name, but you’ve certainly heard her work.

Esther Renay ‘Ester’ Dean, 35, is responsible for many hit tracks, including Katy Perry‘s Firework, Nicki Minaj ‘s Super Bass and Rihanna‘s Rude Boy and S&M.

Now the famed songwriter, nicknamed ‘The Song Machine’, has shared some wise advice with Daily Mail Australia for Australians hoping to break into the industry.

The Songland judge said songwriters have to have the guts to fail, paired with the determination and persistence to keep creating, pitching and promoting.

‘My advice is to do whatever it takes to have product, songwriting is just as much as any other business. Without product, there’s not a proof of concept. You say “hey, I’m a songwriter”, and you say “okay, where’s your proof?”” Ester said.

The talented singer and actress shared the ‘steps to creating’ as a successful songwriter.

‘You can write the song, but after you write the song you need to record the song, and then you need to let someone hear the song. You have to have guts to fail and hear the nos.

‘People will tell you to give up, but it’s all about having the guts to go through it. It’s building you to be tough,’ Ester said.

As a vocalist, Ester has also featured on a number of hits and released her own studio albums and singles.

Choosing to balance her career in and out of the studio, Ester explained why she’s not looking to be ‘100 per cent of either’.

‘Most of the time as an artist I wasn’t really allowed to get into the songwriting process, and then as a songwriter you’re not really able to get into the artist process. I kind of just picked both of them… to have a balance.’

The Pitch Perfect actress always had a passion for songwriting, and claims finding her feet in the industry with big names ‘just opened [her] eyes to a new world’.

‘I got bit by the bug. All of a sudden it was like “wow, this is fun” and they told me I could make a living,’ Ester recalled.

Ester is one of three judges on American songwriting competition series, Songland.

The show follows the journey of undiscovered songwriters as they pitch their original creations to superstar recording artists and a panel of chart-topping music producers in the hope of creating a music collaboration of a lifetime.

‘It’s the behind the scenes of your favourite artists, how they feel about music, and how they pick out their songs to the world,’ Ester explained.
