Sophie Ellis-Bextor screeches during latest Kitchen Disco as 22-month-old son Mickey falls over

Sophie Ellis-Bextor was back with another Kitchen Disco over the weekend.

And in a hilarious moment, the songstress, 41, expertly juggled the roles of doting mum and entertaining the nation in one fell swoop.

Mid-way through singing Part Of Your World from The Little Mermaid to wrap up her live Instagram video, the mother-of-five had to come to the rescue when her 22-month-old son Mickey took a tumble on the kitchen floor.

The cute tot – who is the youngest of the five sons Sophie shares with husband Richard Jones – was seen trotting across the kitchen in front of his mother when he fell flat on his face.

Sophie clocked this and let out a little screech, kneeling to check if he was okay, still holding a tune.

The pro she is, the Crying At The Discotheque singer barely let the incident falter her performance as she made sure Mickey wasn’t hurt.

The resilient tot stood up and walked off, totally unfazed, at which Sophie remained on her knees to finish the song.

She chose it for the lyrics – insisting we could all relate, given that the UK is in Lockdown 3 and unable to be part of the outside world.

She captioned the video, later uploaded to Instagram having originally gone out live, with: ‘I chose this song for Friday’s kitchen disco after party as I thought the lyrics sounded like someone longing to be back in a world where we can meet.

‘But then again it might just be a song about a mermaid wanting to grow legs. Either way, enjoy!’

Sophie has kept fans amused over the trilogy of lockdowns the UK has been forced into during the COVID-19 pandemic, with her husband filming and her sons dancing around her while she sings.

She shares five sons – Sonny, 16, Kit, 11, Ray, eight, Jesse, five, and 22-month-old Mickey – with Richard, and has said recently that, while it would be a ‘wacky’ idea, she hasn’t ruled out trying for number six.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, she said: ‘The idea of number six is absolutely wacky and I suspect it won’t happen but it’s a never say never kind of thing.’

She added that she feels she’s had the chance to experience a whole ‘spectrum’ of personalities thanks to her large brood, explaining: ‘The nice thing is that when you have a big family is you get this sort of spectrum really and you have basically created a tiny little society and kids are quite canny, kids will sort of find something that can be their own and then sort of go headlong into that.’

‘I feel like across the board I’ve kind of got most things ticked really in terms of personalities and interests and all of that stuff.’

After becoming a mother to her first two sons, Sophie revealed she has regularly been asked if she wants to have a girl, but she is adamant that she has never been bothered about having a girl in her family.

The singer pointed out that the questions about having a daughter are disrespectful to her sons and intrusive, and declared she wouldn’t change her family for the world.

She said: ‘Ever since I had two boys I’ve always said the best thing about having a girl would be that people would stop asking me if I’m trying to have a girl.

‘Actually, when I was pregnant with my fifth, I thought, ‘I really hope it is a boy, actually,’ because I didn’t really like the idea of having a girl and everybody going, ‘Oh you finally got your girl,’ and I’d have to keep going, ‘I wasn’t trying to have a girl!’

‘In a way I was quite relieved and also there’s something quite comical about having five blokes, to me, that’s quite funny. It still makes me laugh.

‘The last one I would want is any of my children thinking I wanted them to be anything other than who they are. I have five very different people and, yes, they all happen to be male but that’s literally the tip of the iceberg.’

Sophie’s kitchen discos inspired her greatest hits album ‘Songs from the Kitchen Disco’ last year, which features her hit singles and a host of covers.

Over the summer, she also celebrated the 20th anniversary of her hit single Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) with Spiller.
