‘We had space to grow’: Springwatch’s Kate Humble, 53, claims not having children is the secret to her happy 30-year marriage

Kate Humble has claimed not having children is the secret to her long and happy marriage.

The 53-year-old presenter married TV producer Ludo Graham, 61, in 1992 and revealed that not having children allowed them both ‘space to grow’ over the years.

The Springwatch star also claimed it allowed the couple to feel ‘liberated’ throughout their 30-year marriage.

She told Woman’s Weekly magazine: ‘I think not having them gives you a liberation that parents don’t have.

‘You grow and change a lot over 30 years, and in a lot of ways we’ve had the space to allow each other to do that.

‘We don’t have great expectations of each other, either. I don’t expect him to be the breadwinner; he doesn’t expect me to be the mother.’

Earlier this year, Kate admitted that she was sick of being asked to justify her decision not to have children, saying it was outrageous that women receive judgment for their choice to remain childless.

Kate told Good Housekeeping magazine: ‘I’m staggered women are still asked to justify the choice.’

She added that now that she’s older, however, she cares much less about what other people think.

Kate noted:  ‘That empowers you to give things a go. Like it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t work out. When you’re 20, that matters. When you’re 50 it doesn’t.’

In 2016, Kate spoke about publicly revealing her decision not to have children, after realising when she was just 14 that didn’t want to be a mum.

Speaking on Lorraine she said: ‘I knew very early on that I didn’t want children, so I thought, I’m just going to say it. I don’t think it’s anybody’s business but I think it’s just easier if I just come out and say, ”I don’t want them, I’ve never wanted them”.

‘I know it sounds dreadful but that’s just how I feel. But it was amazing, the reaction, [there were] so many women via social media and in the papers saying ‘thanks for voicing what we feel’, because so many people don’t want kids.’
