Good Morning Britain stars Piers Morgan and Charlotte Hawkins became locked in a feud on Tuesday morning, leaving their co-star Susanna Reid acting as referee.

The journalist, 55, took a number of swipes at the news presenter, 45, before their co-star Susanna, 49, urging them to ‘calm down’ and even questioning if she’d missed an off-air tiff during their morning meeting.

Things began when Piers claimed ‘the real show was starting’ after Charlotte had given her news segment and he and Susanna were starting, leading to Charlotte throwing her script at the dumbfounded star.

Piers began the spat by stating: ‘Welcome to Good Morning Britain, it’s time for the real part of the programme, leaving Charlotte angrily grumbling: ‘What?! The news is the real part of the programme!’

Defending her co-star, Susanna then interjected by defending her after which Piers goaded: ‘That was a great little nibble, that one. Put the rod in and bang they came, the little angry fish – ‘What, what, what?”

Taking her own swipe back, Charlotte, who opened the show at 6am before Piers and Susanna arrived at 6.30am, said: ‘You’ve enjoyed your lie-in, you can actually start some work now.’

Susanna was keen to calm things down as she said: ‘You need to calm down!’ having queried if she had missed an off-air feud between the pair.

Piers’ playful display comes a day after he revealed both of his elderly parents have contracted coronavirus from a member of their support bubble.

He told how his mother and step-father, Gabrielle and Glynne Pughe-Morgan – who Piers said are both in their ‘mid to late seventies’ – have fought the disease over the course of a ‘scary’ fortnight.

He confirmed they have now come out the other side and are in recovery, but his step-father is still complaining about a loss of taste and smell.

Piers said: ‘I’d like to say something to my parents, they are both battling COVID and have been for two weeks and it’s a scary thing for a family…

‘When your elderly parents are fighting it, they are both in their mid to late 70s, and they got it two weeks ago from someone in their bubble and they had to go out and they were very sensible but got the virus and then bang it was like dominoes.’
