Rocky star Sylvester Stallone, 76, is in an all out war with a film producer over the rights to the legendary boxing film franchise.

Stallone slammed producer Irwin Winkler and his entire family for ‘controlling’ the Rocky and Creed films, dubbing it the ‘real Rocky horror show’ in a series of social media posts on Sunday.

More than four decade ago, Stallone burst onto the Hollywood scene playing the eponymous Rocky Balboa, an Italian American boxer from the streets of South Philadelphia. The Rocky films would go on to gross nearly $2billion at the box office.

Taking to Instagram, the Italian Stallion shared a grotesque art rending of producer Irwin Winkler with a scathing caption.

‘A VERY Flattering portrait of The Great Rocky/ Creed Producer , IRWIN WINKLER, from one of the country‘s greatest artist,’ Sly penned. ‘ALSO after IRWIN controlling ROCKY for over 47 years , and now CREED, , I really would like have at least a little WHAT’s LEFT of my RIGHTS back, before passing it on to ONLY YOUR CHILDREN – I believe That would be a FAIR gesture from this 93 year old gentleman?’

He added: ‘This is a painful subject That eats at my soul , because I wanted to leave something of Rocky for my children, but it’s always great hearing from the loyal fans… Keep Punching.’

Stallone, who wrote the screen play for Rocky and starred as the rags-to-riches boxer in the six Rocky films as well as the Creed films, does not own the rights to his famous character.

Rocky premiered in 1976 and was met with critical acclaim. The film garnered nine Oscar nominations, winning three, including the coveted Best Picture. Irwin Winkler served as producer on all Rocky films and the newly released Creed spin-offs.

In another post, Sly wrote: ‘WELCOME TO THE REAL ROCKY HORROR SHOW!! We are Very happy Rocky Producer IRWIN AND MARGO , CHARLES and DAVID and THE ENTIRE EXTENDED FAMILY are staying heathy and very well fed while CONTROLLING All of the ROCKY FILMS FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS ! Bon appétit! KeepPunching!’

This is not the first time that the star has gone public with his anger over being cheated out of the profits of his own films.

‘I have zero ownership of Rocky,’ he told Variety in 2019. ‘Every word, every syllable, every grammatical error was all my fault. It was shocking that it never came to be, but I was told, “Hey, you got paid, so what are you complaining about?” I was furious.’

According to the site, ‘he earned net points on the original movie — which cost just over $1 million to produce and grossed $225 million globally — and received first-dollar gross on the early sequels.’

The Rocky star explained that he was paid for his work on the films but he never received an equity stake.

Despite his apparent frustrations with Winkler, Stallone continued to work with him on all of the films in the franchise, including the three recent Creed projects.

Winkler, who is now in his nineties, was a prolific Hollywood movie producer for decades. He produced dozens of major motion pictures since the 1960s, including the Rocky Films, Raging Bull and The Right Stuff.

The filmmaker has also worked as a producer on a handful of Martin Scorsese films including Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Winkler has not commented on Stallone’s latest comments.
