The Block judge Darren Palmer addresses ‘toxic behaviour’ on the show

The Block judge Darren Palmer says he ‘does not condone bullying’ after fans slam show as ‘toxic soap opera’

The Block judge Darren Palmer has opened up about the ‘toxic behaviour’ many fans have called out on the show this year.

The 45-year-old shared his thoughts in a Q&A on his Instagram after Sunday’s episode in which they revealed the master suite rooms.

Darren invited followers to use the question function on Instagram, writing ‘it’s that time again to ask me anything.’

When one of his followers asked him about the actions of the people from House 2 and 3, Darren didn’t hold back.

‘It’s fortunate we don’t hear about or see anything that happens during the week. Keeps judging fair and subjective. I do not condone bullying,’ he said.

Fans recently slammed the show’s latest season online as ‘toxic’ and a ‘soap opera’.

‘Once upon a time it was a show about building. Now it’s a soap opera with snippets of building,’ wrote a fan on Reddit.

‘B***hiness and toxicity is next level this season,’ added another.

It comes just a few weeks after viewers of The Channel 9 show speculated about a feud between Palmer and the program’s newest judge Marty Fox.

In a Facebook fan group for the show, one viewer wrote: ‘Every time he spoke, Darren glazed over and looked at the floor/other direction.’

Another agreed, replying: ‘He did squirm, didn’t he? With [Neale] Whitaker out of the way, I reckon he thought it was time.’

There have been mixed opinions from fans on newcomer Marty, with some saying he is ‘nice on the eye’ while others think he is too harsh.

In the fan group, one viewer wrote: ‘I believe the judging this year is cruel, these are amateurs’ not interior designers, give them a break. Your words are cruel and demoralising.’

However, some disagreed, with one replying: ‘Omg … what is with people these days ??? The contestants entered a competition.. to be judged!!! The judges will be critical!

‘For the love of god there is nothing wrong with criticism! It’s how we learn… grow up!’

While Neale is still in the new series of The Block, he has taken a step back as newcomer Marty joined Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer as a semi-regular judge.

Neale said he was cutting back on his judging weeks to spend more time with his partner David, who recently experienced some ‘serious health issues’.

This season of The Block is being filmed in Hampton East, a Bayside suburb of Melbourne, just 14km from the CBD.
