Australian track carmaker Brabham announced today it will finally offer a road-legal version of its BT62 supercar. Previously, only two trims were available to customers, neither of which could be plated for the road. Dubbed the BT62R, the car gets a bunch of new upgrades to make it better suited for street use, making it the most compelling trim from the brand yet.
The BT62R may look vastly similar to its track-only counterparts, but there are a number of distinct changes added to ensure a pleasant on-road experience. The most significant new features include adjustable ride height for clearing bumps, a new, quieter exhaust to reduce cabin and outside noises, air conditioning, a heated windshield, a new seat design, and an optional speaker system. The splitter and diffuser have also been redesigned for the road, while the racing slicks have been replaced with road-legal Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSports. Option the “Celebration Series” package, and you get 18-carat gold logos and badges, a bespoke carbon interior theme, and a track pack, which includes the track-specific wing, splitter, and diffuser for swapping onto the car during lapping sessions.
Other than those updates, the BT62R is largely unchanged from its circuit-dwelling siblings. Behind the cabin sits a naturally aspirated 5.4-liter V-8. The engine mapping has been revised for road use, but still makes 700 horsepower and 492 lb-ft of torque—the highest output for any naturally aspirated V-8 currently on the market, according to Brabham. Power still gets to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential, though the gearing has been modified for street use.
Given its track-only origins, we doubt Brabham will be able to legalize the BT62R for the road in the U.S.—but don’t lose hope. The company says it’s working towards the launch of its next car, which is supposed to be a “fully homologated road car.” Whether that means it’ll make its way to America has yet to be determined. But we’re hopeful.
