The Traitors set to return to screens as the BBC acquires the rights to the US version featuring both civilians AND celebrities

The Traitors is set to make a huge return to UK screens this week as the BBC have acquired the US version of the show.

The hit programme came to a nail-biting end in December with Faithfuls Hannah, Aaron and Meryl emerging victorious after exposing Wilf as a Traitor at the very last moment.

And while news about series two is yet to be announced, fans of the show will not have to wait long to get their fix as the American series begins on Friday 13 January, which features both civilians and celebrities.

Exciting! The Traitors is set to make a huge return to UK screens this week as the BBC have acquired the US version of the show

The show – which also made it’s US debut this month on Peacock – is hosted by actor Alan Cummings and is filmed in the very same Scottish castle as the UK version.

The American contestants will be battling it out for a $250,000 (£205,000) prize fund, with famous faces taking part including RHOBH star Brandi Glanville, Below Deck’s Kate Chastain and Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte.

The full boxset is available on BBC iPlayer on Friday, but those who enjoy the thrill of a cliffhanger, the programme will air as double-bills on Wednesday nights at 10.40pm for 5 weeks from the 25th January.

Dan McGolpin, Director, iPlayer and Channels, says of the news: ‘Following the huge success of The Traitors, which has been streamed more than 28 million times on BBC iPlayer and was the talk of the nation over the festive period, we’re delighted to give BBC viewers the chance to watch the brand new US series within hours of its release in America.

‘Hosted by the brilliant Alan Cumming and filmed at the same location as the UK series, it’s a new year treat for those seeking out more treachery – all is about to be revealed on BBC iPlayer, BBC Three and BBC One.’

The UK show’s debut series, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, finished in December and saw Faithfuls Aaron Evans, 24, Meryl Williams, 25, and Hannah Byczkowski, 32, stunned as they discovered Wilf Webster was indeed a Traitor.

The show sees contestants sign up before a small number of players are secretly selected by host Claudia to be The Traitors. The rest of the players are known as ‘The Faithful’ and none of The Faithful know who The Traitors are.

Players are then eliminated when The Traitors meet in secret and decide to ‘murder’ one of The Faithful. The next morning, when the group meet for breakfast, the ‘murdered’ player does not appear.

Later in the day, all the players then have to meet at the ‘Round Table’ and ‘banish’ the player they suspect of being a Traitor.

The person they choose then reveals if they are a Traitor or a Faithful before being eliminated from the show.

At the end of the game, the few remaining players share the prize pot if they are all Faithful, but if there is still a Traitor among them, the Traitor takes all the prize money.

It comes as the BBC is reportedly planning a celebrity version of The Traitors after the first series of the reality competition was a hit with viewers.

An insider told the Mirror: ‘Everyone’s been thrilled with how much love there’s been for The Traitors and a celebrity version is a natural next step.

‘Viewers will get to see different sides of some big names as they try to manipulate others or uncover the truth about fellow players.’

And Traitors producers have since revealed which celebrities they’d love to appear on the show, with Rylan Clark, Kathy Burke and Russell T. Davies on the top ofg their list.

In an interview with Metro.co.uk, executive producers Sarah Fay and Toni Ireland have shared who they say is part of their ideal celebrity line-up.

Sarah told the publication: ‘I think we’d want people who are so invested in the game and want to play the game, and I think that’s what brings the drama so well.

‘I’d love to see Rylan [Clark], he’d be incredible, but also Kathy Burke is a fan. I mean Russell T Davies is a fan. I think I’d want very much a mixture of different types of celebs as well.’

Toni added: ‘To see Kathy Burke calling someone out at the roundtable could be pretty good.’

The celebrity edition is thought to be being planned as a charity edition for either Children in Need or Comic Relief.

Claudia herself has already named a string of stars she would like to see take on the mental and physical challenges, including the likes Alison Hammond and former EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt.

She said: ‘Victoria Coren, Kirsty Young, Adam Woodyatt, Stephen Fry, AlisonHammond… let’s do it!’

The Traitors US will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer on from Friday 13 January. The show will be available on BBC One as double-bills on Wednesday nights at 10.40pm for 5 weeks from the 25th January.
